Sport Edition 17" Rims Don't Fit Anymore After Replaceing Front Brake Pads

I have the Sport Edition A7 17" rims with Blizzak LM-25V winter tires on them. The Sport Edition A7 rims fit on my 2009 BMW 335D base model a year ago, but I recently had the front brake pads replaced with OEM BMW pads and the front wheels don't fit anymore. The rear wheels still fit and I have no issues with them.

The new brake pads push out the brake caliper further out that it hits the inside wheel well.

Last year, my brake pads were not new so the front wheels fit, but with the new brake pads, I can't get the wheels to fit without hitting the wheel well.

When I secure the front wheel, the wheel moves a bit, I can hear the caliper scrapping metal on the wheel inside well and then it stops and doesn't want to move at all until I unscrew the wheel.

I checked tirerack.com and it shows that these rims will fit my car.

Did anyone else have this problem after replacing their front brake pads.

Have you pumped the brake pedal with the car on maybe bring in the caliper a bit more or you might need spacers. If worst comes to worst shave Down the new pads till they fit. ?

Might have to shave down the new brake pads.

Is it possible that the new BMW OEM front brakes pads are thicker than the original brake pads, thus causing the caliper to stick further out and hit the inside of the wheel well?

are you the original owner? Most brake pads are the same the same thickness. Update us with the results.

Maybe you should ask tire rack specifically to see whether they actually fit. I ran into the problem where for 335 most of the 17 in rims don't fit properly due to the size of the front brake calipers. I contacted my wheel shop where they gurantee fit, and they told me a lot of them on their website showing as fit actually do not fit. Only a handful of 17 in actually fits 335. Not sure of the spec on diesels but I would think it is the same as gas version

Also, what do you mean by "inside wheel well?" You mean the spokes and not the barrel, correct? Are you sure you put everything back together correctly?

Do you have another pair of wheels you can try (stock, etc.) just to make sure you didn't screw something up? Either way, all else fails, a set of spacers will "fix" this issue.

I am the 2nd owner of the car.

I called tirerack.com and they told me that the Sport Edition A7 17" rims do fit on my 2009 BMW 335d. They said that they sold 1000's of these wheels and they never heard any issues with them. That maybe the brakes were installed wrong.

When I wrote that the calipers were hitting the inside of the wheel barrel, what I meant is that when you pull the wheel off and look inside the wheel, you can see a thin clean silver metal line at the top right before it curves down to the top of the spokes. When I shined a flashlight at the wheel barrel and caliper, I noticed that the brake calipers were right against the inside wheel barrel.

The original BMW wheels fit just fine and there is a space between the brake calipers and the wheel barrel. So now I have snow tires/wheels in the rear and my all season tires/wheels in the front.

The brakes are not installed correctly.

New brake pads are pretty much all the same thickness. So maybe check the install and see if the pads weren't installed correctly, but if it's happening on both sides it's probably correct. Did you ever install these wheels with brand new pads?

Don't shave the pads, you could just get a small spacer, maybe 3mm or 5mm and it wouldn't even require new bolts.

Both front wheels had the same issue. So its either the wheels or both front brakes were installed wrong.

This is the first time I replaced the front brake pads, so I never had these wheels with the new pads.

The calipers themselves should be in the same position regardless of how worn down the pad is, it's the piston that moves to keep contact with the rotor.

So if the calipers don't move and the wheels fit in the past, then the only conclusion is that the brake pads were installed wrong. The original wheels fit without any issues and the brakes work fine.

If they were installed wrong, wouldn't I have problems with them now? I had the new brake pads for over 3 months and no issues so far, except for the winter wheels not fitting.

How about taking some pictures. That would obviously help us in trying to diagnose your issue.

Most OEM BMW calipers are sliding so part of the caliper does move. You're thinking of fixed calipers like BBK's. On a sliding caliper, the piston is only on one side and it pushes against one side of the rotor, and pulls the other pad in. So if you replace the brake pads, the part that slides will be further out. Look at your front caliper, you'll see that the middle part isn't fixed, it moves.

And OP, other poster is right, without pictures, everyone is just guessing.

Sounds like too high offset with wheels. Push the wheels out with a spacer as suggested. Otherwise, correct sized wheels are in order.

If the brakes were installed correctly, I think I will order some spacers.
