Help locating stolen Macbook

I need to know if there's anyway to track a stolen macbook without MobileMe service. A friend lost his this past weekend and unfortunately did not get the service since he bought it out of country.

Any help locating the laptop will be compensated. He's willing to pay $100 if someone helps to track it down and leads authorities to its location.

most likely even if you could track it, anyone stupid enough to steal a macbook knows how to make it untrackable...same with iphones....

thanks for the responses guys. i guess we'll just have to go the traditional route and let the police see if there were any cameras in the hotel etc.

You have to have mobile me and from there you can track your iPhone through gps and it shows you in a map exactly where it is... It's pretty neat

u can do the exact same thing on ipads and macbooks... even macs.

you CANNOT track a macbook with mobile me.

1-have your friend call apple (1800-692-7753) and report the serial number of the macbook as a stolen computer. (without this i can't help you)

2-if the computer has a password and it was stolen here in miami it will turn up in my store sometime.

3-need to know what macbook it was so i keep an eye out.

06-08 white/black macbook???
08-09 aluminum macbook??
09-11 white unibody macbook???

Thanks i'll try to see if he can give me the info on it. It was an 11 unibody mac. Stolen from Fountainebleu in Miami.

I'm assuming he works at the police department and has something to do with the whole pawn shop law where they're required to pass off the serial numbers on expensive items to the PD to be checked against a master list? At least that's how I think it works, maybe the other guy whose uncle owns a pawn shop can clue us in on how that process works.....
