Hi

They changed the complete set of wiring from the ecu to the enginebay. Ignition, induction and so on.They did not try to find the fault in a speciffic electrical cable as BMW Germany told them to change it all.

The Engine wiring came as a complete set from Germany. They did the work in a day, so I guess its not as complicated as it sounds...

The car has been performing faultlessly over the weekend having covered around 250km since I got it back.
Both long and short trips, cold/hot starts.

Seems like the people at BMW Germany give different solutions to dealers for the same 320si problem...

Glad they have sorted your problem, to be fair if the throttle Pot. had not sorted my idling issue they had ordered a new engine loom in as that was BMW Techs next potential cure.

Just enjoy your si, I swear mine is getting quicker and more economical the higher the miles travelled (24,800).

Hi,
What is very obvious, despite a common thread of idling problems with the 320si, we all seem to be very happy with this car (although I sense some frustration from Topaz possibly from his BMW dealer support). Not wanting to talk up any other issues, but could this possibly be one of the best cars to come out of BMW?
I had an excellent run home tonight in quite wet conditions but this car just handles so well it inspires you to throw it about.

Mine is not even run in (I have only taken it up to 5000 rpm) and yet I love it!!???

I have owned and driven more powerfull and exotic cars than the 320si but the only other car I have ever loved like this one was my 1986 Hartge H26 SP.
And thats saying a lot

Im just having a difficult time finding any official info on the car. Was there any brochures wich featured the si?

Hot on the heels of Team BMW UK’s Andy Priaulx claiming the FIA World Touring Car Championship, BMW has announced details of a limited-edition version of BMW’s 2006 World Touring Car – the new BMW 320si Saloon.

Designed to comply with FIA homologation regulations, only 2,600 cars will be sold worldwide. All feature a hand-built four-cylinder engine made at BMW’s engine plant at Hams Hall, near Coventry. The high revving 2.0-litre unit delivers 173hp at 7,000rpm (before reaching its red line at 7,300rpm) and 200Nm of torque at 4,250rpm.

This engine powers the BMW from zero to 62mph in 8.1 seconds and, if left unchecked, onto a top speed of 140mph. Although inspired by the racetrack, the car still delivers 31.7mpg on the combined cycle and conforms to the EU4 emissions regulations.

This high level of performance has been achieved using BMW’s motorsport technology. Compared with the ‘standard’ BMW 320i, the engine has been significantly modified with larger induction and exhaust valves to increase airflow. The cylinder bore has increased by 1mm to 85mm while the stroke has been reduced by 2mm to 88mm.

The compression ratio of the engine has also been increased from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1, helping to boost power by 23hp over the 320i. Additionally, instead of running with grey-cast-iron cylinder liners, the pistons run in special aluminium-alloy liners in the cylinder block. Engineers have also decided to remove BMW’s patented VALVETRONIC induction system, reverting to a conventional throttle due to the higher engine speeds demanded by a racing engine.

In a direct link with BMW’s motorsport programmes, the cylinder head is cast at BMW’s Landshut foundry alongside Formula One engine blocks. Additionally, to save approximately 10kgs of weight and lower the car’s centre of gravity, the cylinder head cover is made of carbon fibre.

The new BMW 320si mates its high levels of performance with World Touring Car looks. The specification of the 320si is based on the 3 Series M Sport model that includes front and rear aerodynamic body styling, sports seats, sports suspension and aluminium interior trim. Additionally, the BMW 320si features Touring Car-style alloy wheels with BMW Motorsport motif. The front wheels are 8J x 18 fitted with 225/40 R18 tyres while at the rear the 8.5J x 18 wheels are fitted with 255/35 R18 tyres. Finally, mirror caps finished in satin chrome differentiate the car from a standard 3 Series.

Yes I have seen that one before. But thanks anyway.

I have found a lot of info online but not on paper...
BMW made brochures for the E46 M3 csl, so I just thought that they also made some for the 320si.
The tech. specification is mentioned in a 2006 model-brochure from BMW Denmark, but no pics. or text

I didn't use the car for 3 cold days/nights and no problems what so ever when I started yesterday.

Mine is also fine, but the exhaust have a rattle (is this normal?), and the oil-level indicator is acting a bit strange. One day the oil-level is full the next its half empty?

Hi, been a bit quiet for a while enjoying a well behaved si and adding another few thousand miles. Then whats this! a hesitation when coming back on the power between gear changes 1500 to 2000rpm, I tried a couple of tanks of different fuel to check if it wasn't due to a dodgy mix. Then took it into BMW and the Techy found the same dip straight away, booked it in everything tested no luck in fixing but diagnosis looks like new ecu, software load, plugs and a perished breather pipe on the back of the engine block, due in for surgery this week so will update all, unfortunately it co-incides with next service interval and one of the rear tyres needs replacing so its not going to be exactly free.

Still the dogs dodahs

Mine is booked to go in again on the 14th - this time at another dealer as I don't think the 1st dealer I took it to is interested anymore (DL Bristol).

I've tracked my fault down to dampness - when its damp or has been raining its terrible. I thought initially it was down to switching to Tesco 99 fuel but have found the problem lies with the weather.

Worst thing is that it's 2.9k from next service so I'll be back in again next month again! But the next service after will be due again in a few months later again! I might see if they can combine the two together.

New ecu, latest software version 28, new carbon fibre cam cover (£750 because the perished breather pipe is part of that bigger assembly, lucky within warranty), new spark plugs and and inspection service (no oil change).

Hesitation now gone, quicker on pick up from lower revs this could be down to fresh plugs.

Haven't driven it enthusiastically yet but possibly tomorrow, but I'm away for a couple of weeks so a full report on overall improvement will be delayed.

At least Peterborough BMW are still showing dedication to fixing the very small problems.

I found a dramatic change after changing plugs - i'm sure the interval is too long for the si. Or there seems to be duff plugs that have been fitted in factory.

My rears were changed back in Nov £470 for pair of Bridgestones.

Do you know what s/w version you had before the upgrade? It's a bit bizarre that the cam head cover has been changed - surely breather assembley is separate?

If new stealer doesn't sort out mine then I think I may be making a trip to Peterborough for a few days to get mine sorted.

My si has been running a bit rough since it went sub zero celsious here in Denmark.

The power steering broke last night, so its going on a transport to BMW in the morning

ShereKhan, from the factory version 26 was loaded.

I asked if I could have the carbon cam cover as a desk top ornament but they said it had to be returned to BMW for inspection.

The part is BMW property and most likely will be sent back to whoever made it and they will be made to prove they aren't at fault.

I have done some work within automotive industry ppl who make seats for MINI, Land Rover & Maclaren they have the prove they made the seat properly or they pay for the loss/recall costs to end supplier. They tend to work on blame culture.
