Dyno'ed my stock 335i

Took off the intake lid and gained a 8 WHP

Probably would have hit over 290 and maybe new record for stock 335i if it wasn't 102 degrees, literally...

Thanks to Fred @ HPC for the dyno.

Intake is there, top lid isn't there.

Didn't cost me any money to "mod" it.

If my daddy bought me a car... it wouldn't cost me any money to buy it.

Regardless, good numbers. Now, for the real test... http://www.dragtimes.com/BMW--335i-Drag-Racing.html

I think the OP is gonna show up the the strip with a 285 hp - 8 hp car. Doubt he'll run without the lid. I think he's on a slippery slope claiming "stock".

If free is the threshold for stock... define free. Also, aren't there other free mods?

I'd have to agree....not stock. nor does a record for a stock dyno mean anything unless every 335 in the world used the same dyno.

pointless to compare against other cars, not pointless to use as a gauge for tuning your own car.

*sigh*

If daddy bought me a car it wouldn't be stock.

Regardless, I am showing people how restrictive the stock airbox can be.

Just showing that you don't need to spend money to gain power. And why can't I run at the track with a missing lid?

Did I come in here and claim to be the fastest stock 335i and demand a trophy?

What is the purpose of linking me the 1/4 mile times? Did I say I have the fastest stock 335i? Am I trying to drag race my car?

To make you sleep better at night, I shall now mutually rename my car to "bone stock, besides a missing intake lid"

Does that work for you? Let me know.

My apologies. The metaphor was a bit of a stretch. And kinda harsh. Subtle distinctions are often difficult to communicate.

The Sniz post was 100% right on.

285 was with the lid off?

I made 276 on the same dyno in colder weather with everything stock and the lid installed. If i remember correctly they didn't even put a fan in front of the car and it was getting a lot of heatsoak by the third run.

nice numbers i suppose.

because the airbox sucks its air across the lid before it is filtered... meaning that you are running completely filterless

removing the lid has the same effect as completely removing the entire airbox...

I guess you got your theory backwards then? I put down 277 in 102 degree weather with my lid closed (bone stock).

But you can take the medal home, no biggie.

It is not "completely" filterless.

And even then leaving your turbo open for a track run is much frequently practiced then you would think.

But nevermind given the position you were previously in of not being able to afford a leased 335i I do not blame you for making the false connection.

Please make sure to check the skeletons in your closet before you try to offend someone.

By some of your attitudes I am now beginning to understand why you elect to purchase the $2,000 extended maintenance warranty per year, need a write up to change your own oil, can't even install an intake yourself, and spend more time researching wheels then any other upgrade. Your internet/magazine acquired knowledge is just as good as that. Do not get my post count or join date be confused for my knowledge or experience. Maybe if I add an avatar and a photoshoped pic of my car in my sig then I will get more credibility?

I guess posting a stock dyno graph with an open lid, with 3 digit temperatures is the equivalent to stepping on your toes.

Who knew that doing a dyno run with an open lid is parallel to posting an upside down cross.

If I want to eat popcorn and find enjoyment out of this thread I think I am well within my constitutional rights to do so. I mean if it's okay with you of course.

I really don't understand all this hate from other people. What do you have with the OP ? Its just stupid.

The results are interesting to me. I don't think that opening the lid (BUT leaving the filter in place) results in air leaking in unfiltered, because the filter is well sealed in the box. So this means the existing stock lid and air path may be restrictive (which is proven in fact by the existence of open element intakes like BMS. This also means that Dinan's intake design is good (improving the airflow to the existing lid). This also means that the companies building air intakes for the N54 should really do more research and come up with an intake which doesn't just suck the hot air from the engine bay.

He is referring to wheel horse power which is lower than crank horse power.
