after 70k kms, the inevitable fuel pump is failing...

so the last few weeks i've been getting long cranks, first week 5 seconds, and second week 6+ seconds. i know you've all heard this story a thousand times, but i was starting to think i my car was "special" lol. guess not.

i find it interesting that i the half engine light has not come on yet...this is intriguing as the dealership won't accept my car if there are no codes thrown.

there are no engine mods on my car, only upgraded stereo, head unit, interior lights and other exterior modificaitons like suspension and rims.

just thought i'd share my frustration on this board...thanks for reading..

Oh man.. I can't believe they're going to make you wait until you're stuck somewhere to fix it. I'd be pissed at that dealer response.

just dropped off my car at BMW. Desmond Sie is an awesome SA, very accomodating.

i had the half engine light come on 3 times today, so they took the car.

From what i hear, to get the HPFP replace is not a simple task, but a complex process. that is probably why they are trying to push firmware upgrades for early fuel priming to minimize the amount of actual HPFP replacement - as it is an expensive warranty claim. I was told not only do they replace HPFP, but injectors and spark plugs as well....i'm hoping i can get all 3 replaced.

I'll keep everyone posted..

errrrrrr BMW Canada sux...i have to drive an hour to this dealership with someone following me...such a waste of time and a hinderance on my friends.

You think that’s bad? I’ve got 2 weeks left on my warranty and im getting loooong cranks and sputtering but no 'engine light', so Bmw won’t do anything about it! I give it about a month, maybe 2 and im gonna have to shell out the money to replace it myself.

WTF? why?

this has nothing to do with geography. this car is designed with a flaw and distributed internationally.

however, Bmw Toronto are identifying with this flaw and have a process in place. i find that this process is to control the amout spent on this "semi-recall" initiutive.

the first step is to reprogram my car. this might be a great preventative measure, but not a solution to the problem once the HPFP has been deteriated. so i am pretty positive that i will have to visit the dealer in the next 2 months...and waste more time...

but at least we got something to protect our over-priced bmws.

It's a shame man, it can happen to anyone and it's really too bad that the dealerships respond this way. Such remakable engineering and history, yet they almost ignore issues like this. A major Achilles heel for BMW.

Andy- I really hope this one works out for you.

welcome to the HPFP failed club. Speaking from experience you are in for a long and stupid process., They will upgrade your software, which worked for less then a week for me. Then replace some other fuel management items and finally after you've been back three times they will replace the pump. Its really not the dealers fault (BMW Canada) has mandated that all dealer have to go through this process with all HPFP issues. The dealer has to prove 100% that the pump is the problem or they dont get paid (pump cost over $1000).

Once my HPFP was replaced the car has been flawless (touch wood)...

fyi - its 67,000 kms

update - well they finally updated teh software today. apparently, they had troubles updating the software due to my sound system mod, so they weren't able to access the DME. anyways, they updated it, and my car ran worse, and few cylinders were mis-firing, black smoke coming out of tailpipe and the engine would just give up. so at this point they are replacing the injectors, hpfp, and i think spark plugs.

question - with all the parts being replaced above, do they clean the intake valves as apart of the procedure?

No they don't normally clean the intake valves, but if they have replaced all these items you mentioned you should be looking ok. I'm fairly sure most of these issues are directly related to the HPFP....

After all the crap this dealer has put you through, I'd be looking for someones head to roll over this. I'd demand a meeting with the manager of the dealer and tell him exactly what you think about the job they've done and wouldn't hurt to send a letter to Head Office so you have it on file there....

they gave me the loaner vehicle this time, but the service manager was asking me:

"are you sure the faulty codes are real?"
"can your problem be bad fuel?" i didn't even get the chance to refuel my car, it died half way.
"can it be your low fuel indicator?"

i told him, "you tell me, you have all weekend to look at my car now".

i don't want to cause to much trouble as the SA - Desmond Sie is a solid guy and very helpful and i don't want to stir up any unnecessary problems. the car is in their hands now and i have a loaner, so im all good, no biggie really....just kinda upset that my baby is not fixed and in my hands.
