Manual tranny guys. question

How do you guys come to a stop usually? Do you brake with your brakes all of the time or do you let your engine brake, rev match, etc. I usually coast in neutral and use brakes only to brakes with the occasional engine braking. Don't really rev match to slow down much. Figured brake wear would be cheaper than clutch/tranny wear anyday. how about you guys? what do you do and why?

Typically engine braking. Oftentimes just to keep the heel-toe skills polished.

I downshift through the gears to 2nd then brake

I downshift through the gears to 2nd then brake the rest of the way .
Usually the brake starts at 20 to 15 mph or as necessary.
When I downshift I don't use heavy Engine breaking usually it doesn't
pop up over 4k .
I have done this in every manual car I ever had the clutchs always last
about 125 to 150k I think that is pretty normal.

I am in an automatic and I do the same thing as ctuna... no brakes above 20-15 most of the time. I don't believe it's much wear on the engine or tranny, usually under 4k like the man says and really cuts down on the brake wear... plus it's 100x more fun!

i use the brakes :S... i figure its much easier/less costly to replace brakes (as thats what they're meant for) as opposed to adding wear and tear on engine and tranny... i'll leave the heel-toe shifting for spirited driving and track.. i know im going to get a lot of ppl going against me on this

Not in neutral, but I don't usually downshift. So engine braking plus brakes. Brake pads are cheaper than clutches, but I don't go through a lot of either brake pads or clutches. I have ~198k on my Volvo winter beater's original clutch. And I thought I held the world-record for Volvo turbo front pads at 72K.

Okay, a more nuanced post then:

It depends.
If I'm slowing down at, say, a red light, where I think maybe the light is about to change, then I shift down and engine brake for maximum effect.
If I'm coming to a stop at, say, a stop sign, then I just brake/coast to a stop with the transmission eventually in neutral.

Lately I have been using this method (in manual mode) as well but I have asked the question myself how much of wear this puts on the tranny. Any theories from the mechanics out there?

I used to downshift to slow down but when I started getting professional training in high perforance driving with the Skip Barber Racing School I as told that that is not a good technique. They stressed that the brakes are for slowing the car down and the transmission is for getting the car in the proper gear.

Now when I am driving an MT I will use the brakes to slow the car and will heel and toe downshift and double clutch through the gears as the car slows to a point where I need to be in a lower gear. After driving that way for years it became second nature. Double clutching is totally unnecessary in a car with a fully synchomeshed transmission but I do it because I like to and becuase it keeps me in practice for the track car. The only time I use engine braking is when I am descending a long steep hill.

Coasting in neutral is never a good idea.

im actually 100% with u . i rev match / down shift sometimes when i know the lights about to turn green but other than that clutch/tranny > brakes $$$

Skip Barber, too -- but I was driving that way long before I took his courses.

I'll do heel-and-toe downshifts on a closed course but I don't drive that way on a daily basis on the street and if I expect a transmission to last me 100k plus miles.

My wife used to do the "downshift" thing for toll plazas on the Parkway and it irked me no end.

She rarely managed to match the revs with the speed and the car did not sound/feel "happy" when she did it. The end result was that I "volunteer" to do all the driving when it involves one of my cars.

Maybe that was her intention.

if i'm coming to a red light or stop sign, I usually leave it in whatever gear i'm and use the brakes in until the revs get low, then put that bitch in neutral without the clutch

I used to always downshift through all gears when coming to a stop, and that was when I was a teen and didn't know a thing about rev-matching...

Now I rev-match (as best I can) BUT I have tried to break the habit and start using my brakes more- brakes are cheap...

Regardless of style, I've never had to put a clutch in a car
My ranger has 180k
My escort has 170k
My e36 has 170k
My e90 has 108k
All with factory clutch.

While we are on manual transmission...Do you guys know how to make your car blip? Like when you downshift, it makes that aggressive sound? Kinda hard to explain.

I let the brakes do ALL the work. Brakes are cheap and relatively inexpensive to replace.... tranny and synchro's... HA, not so much. Sure, rev-matching helps the synchros, but it's personal preference.

Part of the Joy of having a manual is having it in gear

Part of the Joy of having a manual is having it in gear.
And using the brakes as little as possible .
This heal to toe stuff is racing technique and doesn't exactly translate
to everyday driving unless you are in constant street races.
If you just use the brakes to come to a stop it makes no sense if you
are in higher gears. I believe if even says some where in the manual
to go down through the gears as you are slowing down so you don't lug the
car and have it in a gear so that you can respond to whatever you need to.
When driving in the hills I seldom have to use my brakes if the car is in the right gear and the is especially true going down hills.
Another little thing to remember if you let the stick go to the neutral position its automatically centered and the forward is third and back is forth.

I usually rev match to a stop. I only coast if i'm being lazy and at speeds that would require second or third.

My lazy procedure is: clutch in, coast, stop, shift to first, go.
My on the ball procedure is: clutch in, stab throttle with right side of right foot while braking with left side of right foot, select gear (3>2, 4>3, etc.) clutch out.
