I know the 09 had either one. I think it just boils down to whatever they had laying around? As far as I know there is no real difference? Maybe one is California emissions approved?

my 07 had the n52, my 11 has the n51. only difference i've noticed is a slightly rougher idle on the n51, and lower highway fuel economy by about 2-3mpg on a long trip. if a true power difference exists, it isn't noticeable.

Hmmm... 3.0 DI? Sounds like an N53, but the US didn't get these. The N52 is the ULEV and the N51 is SULEV (or is it PZEV?) You can tell by the presence of a 3-stage intake manifold. You'll see a box with a cable attached to it right next to the "BMW" on the manifold itself. Thats one of the DISA valves. If you have it, it's an N51. If it's the single stage manifold (ie no valve), its an N52.

Old post, but e90pilot, I believe you have the N51 and N52 backwards where it should be "You'll see a box with a cable attached to it right next to the "BMW" on the manifold itself. Thats one of the DISA valves. If you have it, it's an N52. If it's the single stage manifold (ie no valve), its an N51." According to the Component/System comparison chart of the N52, N52KP and N51 the Intake Manifold specs are:
N52 - Plastic w/ 3-stage DISA on high output (OL)
N52KP - Plastic w/ 3-stage DISA on high out (O)
N51 - Plastic only w/ no DISA

I think you have it backwards here. N52 variants have higher slightly higher compression ratio and no DISA. N51 variants have slightly lower compression ratio but makes up for it with the DISA intake manifold.

Just FFI - the last part of your VIN is the important part (7 digits). The first part doesn't tell us anything.

The last 7 would be better, but WB3C (=WB33) tells us it's an N52 328 - http://www.bmwarchive.org/code/wb33.html

Hmm, thanks for the reply. It appears the chart from BMW is wrong under the intake manifold component system https://images.app.goo.gl/xAX9EbL95ybo1f8R6
