I was thinking of ED and driving to Italy, but I was told that if you drop off in Italy, the car is driven back to a German port by some Italian driver, rather than trucking it as it is when dropped off in Germany. Any comments?

there is no drop off point to be shiped from in italy that is correct. The crime rate is very high and bmw had cars broken into and stolen so they no longer have a drop off point in Italy. I actually just went over this on tuesday with a customer who is doing euro delivery.

No we didn't. We spent an afternoon there. These pictures were taken in Parma. Unfortunately we went on a Sunday so the Parmesan Cheese and Parma Ham factories were closed.

We thought long and hard about this. I didn't like that someone else would be driving my new car. But then I rationalized it. BMW is not going to hire idiots to do this since it is their reputation on the line. Furthermore, it is a freaking 330i, not an M5 - these drivers do this ALL the time. Finally, I did not want to waste my vacation time driving the car back to Munich - we work too hard to waste our time driving back over ground we'd already covered.

As it turned out the driver that flew down from Munich to pick up our car was very professional. We took time to look over the car and agree on the condition (perfect ). He was driving straight back to Munich that day and did not stop off anywhere.

We'll see when we get the car back in a week or two...

Yeah it sounds good doesn't it... I think the reality is somewhat different. The guy that picked up our car thought nothing of driving 600 miles in one straight shot. He had his iPod with him and seemed happy enough to get going.

I guess there are worse ways to make a living...

This is old news by now, but for what it's worth, I rocketed from Rome to Minuch in 7 hours to return the Car. On the final leg I remarked to my wife who was reading calmly while I blasted along at an AVERAGE of 95mph, that I had not been buzzed even once by a Ferrari throughout our then 1900 miles of travel. 30 minutes later somewhere outside of Bologna, it happened! I stepped aside at 135 mph and the red 360 hammered by with no effort. I tried to hold on, but he was having nothing of it. He turned me into ashes at 135. Ha!

Wouldn't trade that for the world. 7 hours - after a fresh sleep, wake Saturday morning, head out by 9. Your in your hotel in Munich by 5 that evening ready to eat, sleep and head home Sunday with all those memories!

That sounds like a great trip. Italy is my favourite european country and you seem to have seen a lot of the italian sights, shame that you had to do it all in 10 days. What is this ED then do you get a cheaper price to get the car from Germany? as it still has to be shipped to the US i am surprised that there is any savings but i suppose it puts the US dealer out of the picture.

Mr. F1. That sounds like a blast. We would have done it that way if we had more than 10 days for our vacation.

Rocketron - Actually, the purchase goes through a local dealer. They get to make profit for filing paperwork and tracking the car. Since it doesn't come out of their allocation, they are willing to deal. The shipping is free. The main reason that BMW can do this is that they are not importing a new car, so they save on taxes and split the difference with you. The only catch is the wait. It's long and it's painful.

Not sure it's available in UK though.

Great pics, thanks! Seeing these ED's, especially like yours in Italy, makes it really hard to wait until I actually buy the next BMW to do it Oh well, the pics will have to do for now! By the way, that's a shame you missed out on the tours of the ham & cheese. Nothing like Reggiano Parmigiano from there Or Parma prosciutto! Congrats on the new car

How were your experiences driving and parking in Florence/Rome? I am still researching on where to park in Florence and am highly considering Rome. However I think I'll find some place to park outside of Rome and just stay in the city.

Parking is a real pain, but I have always found it easiest to just park the car in the Hotel's garage and leave it there for the duration. Many hotels work out deals with nearby garages and I have never had a problem after years of traveling in Italy. There is always a chance you will get a scratch or two, but after all these years, the only time I have had trouble was with a rental and I purposely was out driving in the city. Never a scratch otherwise. Remember, it's insured! Try to enjoy yourself!

Do not arrive during rush hour,or at night unless it's after 10:30. Take the car to the hotel and then ask them which garage it should be taken to. You will probably need to leave the keys at the garage, but as I said, never a problem.

PM if you need some recommendations.

Aviano bro, we seen alot of you Army troops for knee scope surgery. I guess the Army makes you guys run alot. Is it true that Vicenza has more than one Pentagon Car Sales? Aviano only has one and its combined with Mini Cooper sales.

Your right parking in the Hotel you stay at is the way to go and just take a taxi or bus to your destination in Rome. Thats what I did.

Good advice, when you took a taxi or bus to Rome, I assumed you did a Rome day trip? If I stayed in Florence then went to Rome, my problem would be my new hotel would be in Rome and not Florence. I'm not sure if the Florence Hotel would like it if I left my car there a few extra days without staying there anymore. I want to find out and take care of it now before I head over there (1 month away).

Can you just drive to Rome and park it at the Roman Hotel? Or is that out of the plan?
