An interesting observation I wanted to bring up in this thread: The reason why no one with a tune (JBD, Evolve, etc.) posted issues with carbon build up, etc.
The best way I can explain this is: All tunes for diesels = More Fuel Volume More Fuel Volume = More Air Necessary In the M57, More Air is controlled by giving LESS EGR (hence more Oxygen). LESS EGR = Less soot and less carbon |

Model: 335d Mileage: 52k Avg MPG: 33 Avg Spd: 50 Fuel: mostly Shell Drive type: 80/20 hwy/city. commuting 42 miles each way at ~ 80 MPH Carbon build up issue yes or no? Yes Additional info: SES light came out for the first time at ~ 49K miles (!!), all injectors + fuel control module replaced under warranty. Was all good for 200 miles. Car is at the dealer for the fourth time (SES light) - carbon build up diagnosed, pulling the head of for cleaning – still under warranty. what's next? it's not if but when the buildup will reoccur. Considering extended warranty. I bought my D in June 201 with 11k on the odo. |

Yeah no doubt about it, I'd say get the extended warranty for the peace of mind.

Model year: 2010 Date manufactured: Oct 2009
Model ; 335d Mileage: 110,000 KM Mpg: 7.8 L/100 KM (iDrive). Avg speed: 80 KM/Hr Brand of fuel: Shell (Reg & V-Power) and Petro Canada. On a scale of 1 to 5 how hard do you drive? 4 Highway/City Mix: 75/25 Carbon build up issue yes or no? YES Additional Info: For the first 105,000 KM no issues. Then first SES appeared and BMW replaced injector # 4. Picked up the D and after driving for 50 KM the SES returned. Brought it back the next day and left it for 2+ weeks and BMW discovered carbon buildup and had the cylinder head walnut blasted to remove the carbon and also replaced the Intake Manifold. Told by SA that problem fixed so picked up the D and again after 60 KM SES returned! Took the D back this time I showed SA a print out I made from a forum post that showed that the DDE may be defective and may have to be replaced to fix the SES. SA spoked to BMW and a PUMA case was opened and BMW agreed to try replacing the DDE. The D was again left there for 3 weeks waiting for the DDE to be shipped from Germany. Sure enough after the DDE was replaced no more dreaded SES and I've driven over 5,000 KM since then. My D was out of warrany and I had to pay $3,900.00 for all the work while BMW cover the rest of the labour + parts. I had a discussion with the SA and the shop Foreman who said I can expect to have to have carbon buildup cleaned in another 100,000 KM! That is the nature of the Direct Injection engine! |

Carbon Buildup and bad fuel injectors.
Car has been at the dealer for 5 days now. Not all the info is in (they're still searching) but so far the injectors are bad and there is carbon build up in the intake. I need any info you can help with to let them know other known issues. They rarely see diesels so they arent too confident about what is wrong and what is causing this.
2009 335d 51,187 Mpg - Car is at dealer, will update Avg speed - Car is at dealer, will update Brand of fuel- Wherever we can find diesel On a scale of 1 to 5 how hard do you drive? - (1.5) 95% of the time 2 remaining 5% Highway/City Mix 65/35 Carbon build up issue- YES Seems to have decreased mpg over past 6 mo. Additional Info: At the time of purchase, there were maybe a handful available in the state. I am so disappointed that those of us willing to buy a diesel bmw are being penalized for it. This is my wife's daily driver. Had some computer issues and I think it had a few sensor replacements. Will have to research to see if it was EGR or Fuel systems related. |

Model: 335d Mileage: 70K Avg MPG: 30 Avg Spd: ? Fuel:Whatever is available. Drive type: 50% highway/50% city Carbon build up issue yes or no? Not that i'm aware of. Additional info: EGR just replaced 1K miles ago because it was clogged (from what the dealer says) causing my check engine light to go on. Car has had CRBD-T on for the last 20K miles. I've had my fuel pressure sensor replaced 3 times + boost sensor replaced twice. DEF Tank replaced because of crack. |

I think people responding with a "no" to the carbon build up question should clarify if the car has been checked for it. If it hasn't then one cannot positively assume that it is not happening.

couldnt agree more. On this page IMO "no" means not yet and yes means its built up to causing a problem.

Carbon buildup is NORMAL. The issue is whether a car is experiencing an abnormal rate of buildup. There's a big difference between having to address it at 80k miles vs 40k.

Carbon buildup IS normal, but so is needing an oil change. The difference here is the design of the vehicle and lack of servicing options. Even at 80k, having no mechanic capable to working on your car and BMW having to do a complete tear down of a daily driver at a cost of nearly 50% of car value is where the word "normal" is not applicable.
In my head that is like saying an oil change for a gasser is $150 and an oil change for a diesel is $3,000. AND if there is an issue of carbon buildup and BMW is the only ones that can save it, they should have scheduled that assessment at 40-50k miles, not 55k miles (out of warranty) and still not catch it until a fault code hits. |

BMW doesn't have to do a complete tear down. I think pulling the head issue is BS and the build up I've seen on intakes has been minimal. I really don't see an issue here unless you have a problem at low mileage which points to a different problem (i.e. Leaky injector). Nothing to get fixated over IMO. |

Socom, you have experience with 335D's carbon buildup? Can you give suggestions on how take care of this? Seeing as this happened to me at 57k, I am expecting to either find a way to minimize the issue or go through this process again at 100k.

No different than any other diesel or DI engine for that matter. I guess have been prepared for it whereas it has caught others by surprise. What I want to know is what BMW thinks the buildup is doing. Neither the intake nor the EGR is getting plugged. I could see the car being down on power due to air restriction from serious build up. The only preventative I can think of is investing in a fuel additive with the necessary detergents which will keep injector nozzles clean, avoid excessive idling, switch to a 5w40 if you burn a lot of oil. This afternoon I hope to pick up my car at the dealer and will try to get the scuttlebutt. I'd like to see photos of these carboned engines. |
