People have posted that there was no noticeable change in temps running the big tom as the majority of airflow comes through the front grills.

Covering too much of the radiator can also prevent the radiator/ac condenser from cooling down effectively.
A 4 inch opening (height) in a bumper can supply enough air to 12 inches worth of frontal intercooler height. So there is more than enough airflow up front for tall intercoolers on our car.

There are more important details to an intercooler:

End Tank Design
Frontal Surface Area (useable)
Fin Pack Design
Charge Rows
Core Quality and Efficiency
Pressure Drop
Fitment
Price
Where it's made
Integrity
Weld Quality
Great post right here.

please explain how bigger makes it better. I could buy an IC core that's so tall it hits the bottom of the hood but if 2/3 of it is covered by the bumper, and grilles, how does ambient air hit the core to cool it and achieve better gains than a smaller IC?

i'd really love to hear this.

do you even have upgraded turbos? and regardless of if you do, don't kid yourself for a second that at most people's power levels that you'll be any faster than them if they had an AA or Helix or VSRF unit. but whatever makes you sleep better at night...

Then if your thinking of long term spend the money on a good AWIC setup ie Air to Water Intercooler .

All the newer M BMW's are now coming with AWIC's

A good AWIC will handle way about 800 HP, and no need for using meth

meth is used for more the cooling but I see your point.

You probably want to get the hardware mods done before the tune, otherwise you'll defeat the purpose of a custom tune.

Going to have some fun first with the PROtuner before the AWIC. Btw this market for the N54 has remained untouched why not build a kit ?

Thats all depending on tuning, and you will get more gains than any FMIC will provide

I haven't seen a good working AWIC used on a daily setup yet. It's definitely the way to for drag cars and other short run vehicles but once water gets to a certain temperature, it takes much longer for it to cool down due to it's higher specific temperature vs air.

There's also the added weight and volume requirements when storing and cooling water. You essentially require two heat exchangers to do it correctly on a daily driven application, one to keep the water cool and one to cool the air.

You can keep an air-air intercooler setup for a precooling solution then add a smaller water-air cooler that can be installed between the a-a intercooler and charegpipe. Plenty of room on that side of the N54 to fit a w/a intercooler like this or smaller:

Something like this usually only has a 0.1 PSI reduction

It can be a small and affective setup easy to maintain.

Where would the heat exhange go ? BMW located their heat exchanger laying downwards in the front bumper area where the a/a intercooler would normally go. So size of an a/a intercooler and w/a heat exchanger will have to be dead on with some bumper modfications
