Bast*rds - a friendly neighbour knocked last night to tell me foxes had been on the roof of the Bimmer playing with cardboard.

They're out of control - they've been in my neighbours cat flap, they've had their heads through my window while I'm sitting right there, they're dropping filth all over my patio and keeping me awake at night with screaming!

Anyone else been having problems?

I do have some foxes around, but they tend not to carjack, break in or shit in my garden. Could be my dogs putting them off or the fence maybe, but they never come in. Sorry.

SNAP!!! Woke up one morning and saw paw prints on the roof and boot of my car! At first I thought it was the neighbours car but went out one night and saw a fox all over the said neighbour's car!!! WTF!!!! Unless i cover the car EVERY night there is no way to stop them damaging the paint is there?

Foxes screaming is an awful sound

They come round mine and i regularly see the neighbours cat and fox in a mexican stand off on the road.

They are nice animals, see them quite often around my parents farm.

Yeah, I do think they are nice animals, and I'd could never kill one myself, but it's a shame that I can't leave my 8 month old girl alone for 5 mins in my own house in case a fox comes in, or even, once she starts crawling, put her in the garden without checking every inch of patio for poo.

Oh yeah, and they also keep digging up my plant pots

Some kind of official control does need to start though, I mean, in a park near me they close it yearly to shoot deer to keep the numbers down.....

I agree with not killing anything for "pleasure" but nobody is advocating that.

They never had 'predators' as such, it's just that they were not always the Apex predator and therefore had to compete with Birds of Prey, Wolves, Britains 'large' Cats, Weasels, Stoats and to a lesser degree with Badgers and Bears as a result.

That's all irrelevant though because Bears/Wolves haven't been an issue for foxes to worry about for several hundred years anyway (I don't count one or two bears or isolated areas as a problem) so I agree with the need to maintain sensible numbers in some areas.

I suspect the reality is that whilst foxes exist in urban environmens, they are relatively few vs those in rural areas, hence the differing views on how to handle them. I wouldn't see any point in shooting a fox in Leeds for example, because it won't live beyond a couple of years due to cars and other factors.

If your livelihood depends on it though and if there are lots about? That's a different matter. Diseasel is right about at least one thing - Foxes have outlived Britains other animals because like any dog, they adapt quickly and aren't nearly as fussy about habitat or food as the other animals I've listed. Lack of hunting for fur might come into it, but I suppose one could argue that Fox pelts WERE popular, even if their coats were not.

RCUK - the council are right. Don't let the BBC scare you into worrying about foxes with your kid. There has been 'one' incident reported of a fox attacking a baby and I expect that was under fairly unique circumstances. I can tell you for sure that the reason foxes have standoff's with cats is because they aren't especially big, nor nearly as vicious as a dog - they DEFINITELY prefer to pick their fights with things that won't fight back and wouldn't go near an 'independantly mobile' human, even if it was a toddler.

I agree that they can carry off lambs that are a little bigger than a baby, but I would certainly say it's an extremely unlikely occurence unless you leave your kid crawling around on the lawn at 02:00 in the morning.

Just wait until some people get their plans ok'd to reintroduce wolves and bears as I hear is happening. I'm not sure WTF they are thinking to be honest....

You have to have a level of respect for all animals as hunting one animal saves the life of many more in the case of a fox

I fully agree with not killing for pleasure / sport but Diseasel is not doing that from what I can gather. He seems to be a professional using the proper equipment and not some half-arsed amateur leaving the fox crippled or in severe pain.

If you live in the countryside, as I do, you'd know that keeping the numbers down is very necessary and someone has to do it.

Furthermore, you were the one on another thread, who, quite rightly, chastised someone for calling someone else a "twat" simply because they didn't agree with their argument. Then you call Diseasel a prick for no apparent reason, unless you took him to mean he killed foxes for fun, but I didn't get that.

Male llama piss is where your solutions at! I'll explain:

Some friends of ours breed chickens and geese, they roam free, about 1,000 at a time are out in the fields. Across the road from them is a game hatchery (ducks, grouse etc) that has to employ 'Fox Killers' as they cause such a problem for them.
Now our friends let their male llama roam free amongst the birds pissing and shitting as it goes! Once the fox gets scent of the lamas piss its off, shit scared and won't go near. Now this llama has not had the snip so his piss is rife with hormones, this is what the fox hates. Sorted! So go out with a large pot and find a friendly llama to piss in it for you, spread it over your car, garden and cat flap. Job done.

However our friends do suffer from herring gulls ripping the heads from their chickens. We've seen dozens cop it this way, the gull swoops in takes the head from the chicken. They've shot loads of gulls and even have it on film taking the chickens head!

if you own chickens or lambs then you can lose your entire business in 1 night if they get in.

My parents have a load chickens and 1000~ lambs per year and losses to foxes are very rare, most foxes live on worms and rodents. The farm dogs are so far the only cause of chicken deaths.

Funny thread, replace fox with cat and see the same people screaming for blood suddenly change their view. Same damage, even more to wildlife but they have big eyes and poison your unborn child.

Very nice indeed. i recalled reading on the news a while back there was some foxes who jumped into some babies room and started killing the baby like rug and then the father heard the cry and went to save the baby . The fox tried to fight back instead of running away, the father ended with a bloody arm or something like that and the baby was the worst.
