Dinan software downloading question.

Does Dinan send your Vin # to BMWUSA? I know part of the Dinan software downloading is to register your vin # with them.

Thanks,

Your Dinan software's "registration" process is mated to your car - I think it's the "electronic signature" of your ECU rather than your VIN number, but one way or another, there is a "handshake" between BMW and Dinan to make sure the Dinan parallel warranty is registered for your vehicle, and to insure that any future downloads of updated software (or in case your ECU is re-flashed by BMW) can be installed free of charge. When they connect it to the Dinan computer for downloading, it checks electronically to make sure they get the right software version for your car, also.

Your vehicle "finger print" is regerstered with Dinan to your stage flash software version.

So in other words, if you go to any Dinan dealer (BMW or not) they would know what stage flash software belongs on your car.

How about the BMW dealer? Would he know if I bring my car for service?

Thanks

They would know yes, your cars "finger print" will be crossed verified with Dinan's data base

Dinan stopped giving VINs to BMWNA three years ago. But a BMW/Dinan dealer can look it up in the Dinan system.

Your car has to be flagged somehow, that is how BMW knows whether or not they will pay for the service or to send the claim to Dinan. Or am I wrong?

Thanks guys, I have to dig a little more before I get the software for my 335is. I would like to be "undercover" when I bring the car in for service.

BMW pays for your warranty service unless they say the problem was caused by the Dinan parts. There can be a lot of different scenarios, but automatically billing Dinan for all your repairs isn't one of them.

One other thing - if for any reason the dealer ever re-flashes your ECU, it will over-write the Dinan software and you may have to pay to get the Dinan re-flashed over the new BMW software if the dealer isn't aware. I don't understand the concern over having Dinan...there's no need to be "undercover" like the piggybackers. I got mine at my dealer and always make sure they know it's there if they're going to be doing anything that might require a reflash, like replacing a steering sensor (had that done last year).

Does it make a difference if I get the software installed at a BMW dealer or an independent Dinan shop?

If BMW over-writes your Dinan they HAVE TO reflash your Dinan at no cost.

If you go into a BMW/Dinan dealer without Dinan, because you erased it, then yes they can charge you for reflash.

I always check my car if I have Dinan on it or not after leaving the dealer. They do make mistakes.

Good question. Have your Dinan "software" installed by a BMW/Dinan dealer. You can have the Dinan mods installed by an independent authorized shop as their labor will be cheaper and perhaps dont have to pay taxes on the parts if Dinan does not have a branch in your state. This part is open for haggling.

If you have any warranty related issues with your car make sure it goes to a BMW/Dinan dealer only.

Do not send the car to a BMW dealer that is not an authorized Dinan dealer or else they may give you problems with BMW warranty claims.

Does anyone know if you are the second owner of a Dinan vehicle that if it was removed b/c of the sell of the car ( or maybe it was accidentally removed by dealer) that Dinan would re-flash the S2 back. I just found out after year and a half of owning my car that it had a s2 Dinan tune. From what I can tell and knowing a bit about the tune, my car doesn't have it currently.
