Thoughts on Allianz Extended Warranty
Hi everyone, just wanted to get your thoughts on some New Vehicle Extended Warranty Insurance through Allianz.
I've got a 07 E90 323i M Sport that I bought 10 months ago as a CPO vehicle. It is just about to run out of original manufacturers warranty and whilst it is still covered I have the option to puchase a BMW recommended Extended Waranty through Allianz. It seems to be as comprehensive as the original BMW warranty covering all but the usual perishables. The prices I have been quoted are. 1 Year, 25,000kms - $2,590 2 Year, 50,000kms - $3,100 3 Year, 75,000kms - $3,590 The car has done 70,000kms and touch wood has given me no issues in the last 10,000kms/10 months that I have owned it. I know these prices seem expensive but this is my first BMW and I am kind of paranoid that something is going to go bang and cost big $$$ to repair. I understand its pretty easy to get bills in excess of $1,000 for even small faults let alone if a major problem comes up. What are your thoughts? Do anyone else have any experience with this warranty from Allianz? |

IMHO - depends on the state of your car. Get it thoroughly checked out by an independent BMW/German specialist mechanic. If there are no issues with your car then you would be wasting your money.
BMW engineering is on par with the best in the world, of your car has done 70K with no issues then it is highly likely it will double or triple that as long as it is well maintained and regularly serviced. |

With you here Marto - I'm considering signing up for something like this on my car before its factory warranty runs out. Agree, it does seem expensive and likely that you wouldn't have a $3K-plus failure before 2 years is up. I doubt Allianz lose money on these....

Thanks for your thoughts guys, I've booked the car in for an independant pre warranty inspection with a local BMW specialist. Don't expect they'll find anything but at least if they do I'll have some time before the warranty runs out to get it addressed.
Think I'll prob give the warranty a miss, cant help thinking that $3,600 will do more in my pocket for the time being. IF something comes up, at least I'll know its money I have to spend. Murphy's law says whatever I decide will be wrong anyway!! |

I went to a reputable dealer yesterday and asked about their warranties. They said by law they offer the 30 day warranty but they can also up-sell to an Allianz warranty that covers the car as the NEW warranty would.
I asked him to give me examples of what it covers. He said everything until the car reaches 3 or 4 year or 200,000 KM on the odometer (whichever comes first). He said a client bought a pre-owned 5-Series and his gearbox sent. The warranty covered parts and labor for the $11,000 repair. The estimate of the warranty for a $40,000 pre-owned BMW was around $3,500. Now if it is what the dealer said it is, its not a bad option for piece of mind. But I take everything a dealer says with a grain of salt. Anyone ever had to claim on one of these? |

I'd be inclined to try my luck without it.. most of the costs associated with a 3-4 year old car will not be covered under a warranty anyway. eg. brake pads/rotors, battery, filters, hoses, etc. - all limited life span items, and not covered. I think you'd really need something catastrophic to happen to make it worthwhile, and these cars are made well enough for that to be unlikely.
I'd possibly consider it if I had major problems with the car in the past, but I'd probably also consider selling it if that were the case.

Ended up not getting the warranty, the inspection I had done showed up nothing to be concerned about so decided to keep the money in my pocket for the time being.
Fingers crossed! |

Too true, yet if the Allianz warranty the dealer told me about is for 200,000 and 4 years the car may be as much as 7 years old by the time its been driven for 2 more years.
