Hi All,
Just recently got my e92 this past week. I just bought a CF performance trunk spoiler off ebay. Seller said that it adheres to the trunk with double sided 3M tape. I have never used 3M tape or done anything like this before so....

1.) Is there a specific area on the trunk that the spoiler goes on? (I know theres like a little chamfer on the trunk. Does the spoiler sit on that?)

2.) What is the best method to mount the spoiler to ensure that it it straight and parallel to the trunk? (My friend who has done it said to use painters tape in 3-5 areas perpendicular the spoiler to mount it to the trunk first to get the alignment down. Then remove the painters tape along with the 3M tape as you move)

All tips/advance are welcome. Thanks in advance.

before sticking it on with tape. place it where you want it and mark the corners and get it centered.

biggest key is cleaning the trunk so the 3M tape stays. use rubbing alcohol a bunch of times to get all the wax and dirt off the area.

^this, plus if you can try to apply as much pressure on the area as you can for as long as you can. especially the corners.

Its easy, basically what they said. Just start at one end and bend the spoiler to where you exactly need it and then press as you go.

betalink is also non-removable. If you ever want to take the spoiler off for whatever reason, don't use betalink

After marking with painter's tape I clayed the area that it was going to adhere to; and then I cleaned with the alcohol wipes afterward.

First 24 hours I had weight on it; and then let it sit for another 48 hours in the garage (did it during the summer; perfect weather allowed me to take the motorcycle).

Not a single issue to date.

What did you use as weights and how did you weigh it down? And why 24 hours? I plan on installing it in the afternoon and then driving my car the next day. Will that pose any problems with it not adhering properly?

We use 3M tape on some assembled products in the factory where I work.We had some issues and the 3M rep recommended applying pressure overnight for maximum adhesion; and then not applying pressure on it for some (unspecified) time period afterward.


Is it the same tape - no. But since the weather was prefect and I had alternate transportation I figured it wouldn't hurt, and might just help.


You're probably good to go with your plan based on everything I've read; I just had the opportunity to do a belt & suspenders approach so took advantage of it.

If you spray the area with Windex first, you can slide the spoiler around after you tape it. Then use painters tape to hold it in place until the Windex evaporates. That's how I did mine and it's been in place for over 5 years.

My spoiler hasn't arrived yet but based on replies here, previous threads, and other online advice, I think I will wipe it down with alcohol first and align it. Then use some kind of putty to get the corners set. Adhere the spoiler using the attached 3M sticker and then use painters tape to secure it and then remove the putty. The tape would hold it down over night.
Thoughts?

The Windex trick would increase your chances of getting it straight

3m tape achieves 75% adhesive strength in 15 minutes. You don't need to tape it over night if the temps are 70 degrees F or above. But do what you feel comfortable with. I've done several of these and the only really critical part is using painters tape to help align the ends. Then just peel back the red covering off the tape as you apply pressure on the spoiler from one end to the other. Don't be taking all the tape covering off at once.
