Is there no limit to eBay's greed and hypocrisy?

I've only just noticed that eBay are now charging final value fees on P&P costs!!

So I just sold an item - it went for £0.01, I wasn't really bothered as it was being reused rather than dumping it at the tip. However it cost £10.99 to ship, so I charged this at cost price. Lo and behold eBay snaffle 10% of this and a further 3% on the PayPal fees!

So to cover my cost in future I would have to inflate the cost of P&P by 13%, taking the cost to £12.41, and then they ask the buyer to rate me on the reasonableness of my P&P charges!!! If that's not blatant hypocrisy then what is?

I raised this with eBay support and their response was:

"We did at first raised our eyebrows when we got this update about the fee change. Upon our discussion with the pricing team, we were convinced that to some extent, this will be a win win situation for both the buyers and sellers."

They have been doing it in the US for a while now. Sellers used to get around final value fees by inflating the shipping cost while lowering the item cost. I guess eBay figured that out and realized they were missing out on revenue. Also, they are really pushing for sellers to offer free shipping on everything and this is one way to do it.

I get complaints from buyer (and low rating P&P) all the time.
I charged £15 one time for something heavy and insured but in reality it was £26!

Plus all the wrapping material I brought and driving, parking at the post office in town.

I got so many bad reviews for P&P that ebay has given me few warnings on my rating and say I need to improve.

WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS GOING AND HOW IS IT FAIR?!

Sell something for 99p and cover the expensive postage and the ebay fee?

Please tell me why I shouldn't throw it in to the sea or land fill?

How can they charge fees on postage? That's not right at all.

The last few times I sold things, a while ago now, there was limits to what you could charge for postage.

The maximum didn't even cover what is cost to send and insure a mobile phone.

eBay isn't even particularly cheap these days, people seem to be prepared to pay silly prices just because it's eBay. A google search will invariably turn up the same product at a better price, a decent eBay alternative is well overdue

I'm done with them! I buy from proper shops now. It's too difficult to know nowadays whether or not half the stuff you buy on ebay are bloody Chinese fakes.

My last purchase off ebay that turned out to be fake was a packet of Gillette-Fusion razor blades! Fucking razor blades would you believe!

I get a degree of satisfaction when I manage to sell something off eBay but avoid all their exorbitant fees.

However, eBay must be keeping a tally of the number of listings that I end early. I was performing my 2nd 'offence' for the year when I got a warning message informing me that next time I may be charged the full final value fee!

So on the next occasion, after flogging my item early, I had to keep the listing open (albeit with a sky high price to deter any punters).

eBay are great for coverage but have just got too greedy for their own good.

I tend to avoid selling on ebay now as after all the fees you get less than if you stuck it in the local paper, I think greedy is the way they are currently

I work with eBay and deliver them between 80k and 100k shoppers every day and they have taken between 20% and 25% of my margin this year.

Just recently they published glowing set of accounts. Well...

If it's allowed, perhaps consider one of my web sites for future unwanted goods. Recycle.co.uk - we try and fulfil unwanted items to charities and local support organisations before offering to public.

They are biting the hand that feeds them. If no punters want to run auctions because they will get all proceeds robbed on the fees, less hassle selling locally or chucking the stuff in a charity shop and no small vendors can afford to offer well priced products due to the fees then pretty soon they won't have a business.

They draw people in with free listing days then rob them on the selling fees. Short sighted strategy.

I don't think they really care about the occasional private seller. The only way they'll get meaningful growth now (which is their primary concern to maintain share price growth) is to expand the business sellers.

totally agree. you pay to list. you pay final value fee and you also pay paypal charge. they must make a fooking fortune. sold an item for about a £100. in the end i seen £88 for it or something.

I tend to use gumtree now... its a lot less glamorous - but stuff like phones etc seem to sell ok.

Problem with gumtree is perception, as in people think it's a hot bed for dishonest sellers flogging stolen stuff. Well, I do anyway
