Can you get all other gears engaged whilst stationary?

If yes, then you will need the box stripped unfortunately.

If no, it might be the clutch not disengaging fully, thrust bearing or fork issue which is still expensive but less so.

Sounds like a synchromesh fault to me, possibly a selector fork but most likely the syncro.

Try engaging it with engine stopped. If its reliably okay then syncomesh parts damaged.
If still troublesome, probably the selector fork. Either way these are inside the gearbox.

Unfortunately you need to strip that box down so its quite a big job

Cheers dude I will take it to the dealer first and see what they say. Normally they don't like spending there time or money they blame it on the driver see what they say as it's under warranty and it's a cat d.

Say I come up to a traffic light and as it's got the auto stop start it turn off, I turn it back on and dont going and there's cars behind me and am messing around trying to put it in gear haha.

I will most probably have to open and sort it or I will just have to get other gearbox.

Cheers mate really appreciate your help, your a top dude you know your stuff, once again thanks

I have this problems with my 320d. i used to have to select 6th then 4th then 2nd then it would go into 1st Lol

But did a bit of research and it seems to be a reasonably common problem. found out that if you rev the car abit you can also select 1st (handy at the lights when it wont go in!) havent been able to find out what exactly causes it though?

trouble with sourcing another box is you never know if it has the same issue? (unless you get a new one of course which would be silly money) If you get the box removed a specialist shouldnt charge much more then 200 to rebuild with a few new syncros. (my local specialist charged me 165 to rebuild a quaife box in the past)

It's a 2010 car under warranty - just take it to the dealer and get them to sort it, surely?

Even at silly money from BMW Parts Dept, or under manufacturer's warranty, you do not get a new box, it is a reconditioned/re-manufactured one that may have already done 60-70K !!!!!!!!

oh right. Forget that! Lol

when i had my box rebuilt last time the place i took it to was the place that bmw/mercedes and other companies locally send all their boxes too anyway as well. Would imagine if i had gone through them for the same job price would have been like 3 - 4 times as much!

havent been able to find out what exactly causes it though?
Knackered synco/cones etc etc
Same as the OP I suspect.
By running down the box you are spining up all the various layshafts inside and matching rpms a bit better.
Turn the Stop Start off completely on the dash button would be my advice if he's getting stck at the lights...

I had a mini with a knackered clutch slave and had to rev match (doube declutch) to go down the box.
This is where you select neutral, lift off the clutch, rev the engine and then clutch back down and jam into the next lower gear.
Get it right and its quite smooth actually, and if the syncromesh has failed this will work for you too...

However, I wanted fourth to third as approaching a roundabout.
Rev matched and got into a lower gear okay, and bang - and the gearshift goes limp in hand.
Managed to get first insead of third at about 25mph and the engine whipped so hard that the gearbox remote arm sheared clean off at the gearbox

Ahh i see. if its not selecting first does that mean just the first gear syncro is gone or others too? I also find sometimes when this is happening that it can be hard to take out of gear as well. Like if im in second and need to change down it can feel like it doesnt want to come out and i have to apply abit of force to get it out

Yeah I did, they said I wasn't putting my foot right the way down, which I was it seems to be ok at the min.

They always try to blame the driver not just BMW all the other companies do to and the BMW in Birmingham city centre are not the best with there custormer service. Don't get me wrong there is a few that are awesome and really helpfull.

The reason why this happens is because you don't put your foot right the way down on the clutch. That's what the dealer said. Lol

Exact same problem with my car, i only do a short distance to work and its a pain in the arse.
When the gear stick is stuck near first i rev the engine and it slides in no problem.
So do you reckon it would cost much to fix the box? Couple of hundred?

the job could snow ball if you opened it up and end up costing you a fortune, you never know what else could be worn if you opened it up. I wouldnt like to guess at prices it would give me nightmares lol

I would say mine is a little notchy going in first but has never got stuck, just a bit stiff. Maybe an oil change would help, bmw say they are sealed for life units but they give us a drain and fill plug on the gear box.
My local dealer would of done it for me but wanted a fortune to do it so i did it myself.

+1

Its labour cost to remove and replace that tops it up a fair bit.
And whilst out you would be crazy to not consider the clutch/RB/flywheel maintenance.

Won't get much change from £600 for the box work alone is my guess.

I have the similar problem, it happen rarely for beging and make me think it may be my opeartion problem, but it happened more frequently. I think it may bacause the wear everytime it happen.

It is the mechanical problem of synchromesh gear. Finally, you have to replace the gearbox, go to your dealer.

***** sorry, my problem is when when i shift to 1st gear and start to move, the shift will pop back to neutral position with a loud noise!!
