Damn that's really impressive OP. I've been thinking about doing this to my car in Alpine White lately, and doing the mirrors/roof in black, or just say hell with them and leave them Monaco Blue...now that would be unique.

Nice job, thanks for sharing.

i used Oracle 631... 3 yr vinyl

My supplier can order in any yardage length (or so i think) because what i got was 1 long 25 yarder.. LOL

Stuff i used is hard to work with, but it works

A good option might be the ORACAL 751 High Performance Cast Vinyl 48" x 50 Yard Roll for only $384... only 2 mil thick but it describes it as being very easy to work with around rough edges...

So basically what's it like taking this stuff off after a couple years...if it is anything like window tint with the application fluids I don't think it is worth the trouble...lol

Or do you just peel the stuff off and wash the car and you are good to go???

OP,

Someone linked this in the UK section and I just wanted to say that I applaud you for tackling this job yourself. I don't think I could make a real judgement without seeing the car close up and in person but from your photos it looks like you did a great job.

It's obviously not to everyone's taste but I think you deserve kudos for even attempting this. I think the photos look great and I personally am a fan of the matt black look.

Once again, top job!

EDIT:

Also, I happened to call up company that carries out paint protection film installations...I was quoted £3,500 for a complete coverage. Now I assume the application method for the protective film is the same as the wrap you have carried out, maybe the film is a little more expensive though?? Any thoughts on this?

I can't speak for OP,

But i've done some research into this myself, For a complete vehicle wrap of my car with material seems to be $2500-$3000, And the material itself I'm told from these companies would cost me $1750.

Now obviously thats a high profit margin, cuz I can get a hookup due to my school alumni where he'd charge me $1400 for 3m, air release material + install. Or for only the material he'll charge me $1000.

Much cheaper, but still damn expensive. I'd be more willing to attempt it myself for $200, and spend the $1400 later if I like it that much lol.

And I think the application method is the same for the protective film as the normal wrap.

I did some research as well, ORACAL 970RA seems to be the best option from reading online. Google ORACAL 970RA, you will see threads and posts about the 6XX and 9XX applications being too thin, or not appropriate for curves.

A roll of the 970RA is about $500, but there may be suppliers who can price it by the yard. Personally I'd like to try the window trim with this stuff.

same here

props to the OP for tackling the job...looks good from the pics!

i was quoted locally for oracal 631 50 yards x 48" $208.00

i will be starting this project by may 3rd, and will sell the excess to another member for half the price. i dont see this taking more than 25 yards, leaving enough to do a full car.

Great work. You have some serious patience to be able to complete this project. Def makes me want to try it, but I think I'd be afraid to make cut marks into my clear coat with the exacto knife.

For those who attempt it, be careful with the knife on your clear coat. This is why the thinner stuff is better, it cuts easier. You have to apply a bit of force with the thicker stuff.
