Warranty VOID if I don't use BMW Synthetic Oil
I dropped my car off to get it topped off and I asked my SA about using some Amsoil synthetic for my next oil change and she told me that if I used anything else besides BMW Synthetic oil that my warranty would be completely void. WTF?

Wrong several different ways! They can't void a warranty except when they can prove a non-issue part/fluid caused a specific failure, and then ONLY for that failure and any related ones.
Plus, BMW tells you right in your owners manual that you can use any oil that meets the spec shown there -- there are several of them, BMW synthetic being one. But there are others, and some of them are even stated in the manual! Tell her to RTFM next time! Check the rating on the Amsoil, it may NOT meet the requirements. If not, common sense says don't use it. |

^^^^ Thank You! that was very informative! Just to clear things up: so the only Mobil 1 I can use is the 0W-40 and not the 5W-30 according to what you have just listed?

Give her a break. She's just following company policy by keeping it simple. The best answer you would get would be "Use whatever oil you want as long as it meets BMW spec". I would NOT expect any SA to know whether or not a specific oil meets BMW spec.

Also be aware that Amsoil is NOT LL01 approved. "Reccomended for" is not the same as approved.
If the SA said that using Amsoil would void the warranty, then she was correct. However you can use any oil that says "BMW LL01" on the bottle. As already mentioned, for practical purposes that means Mobil 1 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 0W-30. There are some others, but they are hard to find. Last edited by 742; 01-08-2010 at 03:09 PM.. |

I've had no issues using LubroMoly 5W30, though it's LL04, not LL01. A quiet engine is a nice engine!

BTW, the SA also told me that the reason why my driver's side headlight beam is lower than my passenger's side is prevent the blinding of oncoming traffic with my beams. Is there any truth to that? If that was the case then why don't they lower the passenger side to match the driver's? =P

Just out of curiosity, do you guys recommend using LL-01 oil in all your cars or just BMWs? I would think it would be great for any turbo European car.

That is correct...you want the 0W-30 Castrol (which will be labeled Euro formula or something like that) and not the 5W-30 Castrol to get a LL-01 approved oil. Actual BMW oil is 5W-30, and is indeed Castrol, but it is not anything sold in the parts stores here in the states.

It is the 5W-30 that is confusing. It does not meet the spec (as sold over the counter in the United Sates), and it is not the same as the "Castrol 5W-30" sold by BMW. But when in doubt all any of us need to do is read the back of the bottle that we are buying. All the approvals will be listed. |
