Need to change front/rear brakes, service light, need recommendation..
I got a service light indicating my front and rear brakes need changing in the next 1000km (~600 miles). Checking at the dealership they change disks, pads and sensors when you bring your car in for this. For all 4 they charge total of $1000 including tax and labor.
Should I go a different route and get my parts elsewhere and DIY this or is it not worth it? Are there better options in terms of parts for around the same price? What about BBKs? |

Where do you recommend I get the parts?
Well it's rear first the front but they're 2k apart on terms of service according to the computer in the car.. BT tool, under conditional service, also has them very close together in terms of service. |

Go to www.getbmwparts.com, they're a forum sponsor here. You'll save about half of what the dealer charges. Check out the DIY section too. There are some good write-ups on brakes.

You need rotors, pads, and one sensor per end. BMW rotors are really soft and usually need to be replaced. If you see a good size lip on the outer edge if the rotor then the rotor is worn. If that lip is small then the rotor is still good. I got 80k mi on my front pads and the rotors were DONE. I replaced the rears at 50k mi and the dealer said the rotor was ok. I would just cough up the cash and get new rotors.
If you want to upgrade the brakes and you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, you gan get BMWs brake kit. It's not a true BBK but had a good caliper and decent sized rotor that fits a 17" wheel and is more that good enough for street use. There's a DIY on replacing the calipers in the DIY section too.

Are the prices you got shipped? Rotors way a ton so sometimes shipping is a lot. Also you could go with Zimmerman rotors, IMO just as good as OEM and they are significantly cheaper in cost.

The price I got ($1000) is from a local dealership. They provide all the parts and labor + in Canada I have the 13% tax (original price is around $850 plus 13% = ~$1000)...
Is there any particular depth on the disk (rotor) that I can check for to know that they're worn? I'm definitely changing out the pads. What about the sensors? How do you check if you need to change those? Is it weird to be changing brakes this early? I'm at 54K kilometers (33.5k miles).. |

You will need to replace the sensors for sure but I'm not sure of the depth of rotor ware. If the light is on it's pads for sure and sensors. They way that sensor works is by waring down a plastic cover until two small wires touch to rotor and complete a circuit. (at least that's how it looks like it works)

I read somewhere that Zimmerman makes the OEM rotors for BMW. If you by them from a BMW you get a fancy BMW box.
