i have a similar problem with the oil gaskets...

indy shop quoted me 700 to change the oil gaskets and spark plugs... and parts are more expensive down here.

fuel injector without labor is $200+ bucks online, more at dealer, 6 coils are $360 bucks online without labor

$150 to change plugs alone is reasonable

to change all that parts and labor you looking at $800-900 bucks, not $260

I can not agree with you more completely. Its not BMW though its the 335i's. They are POS. The N/A ones are golden. GL with the situation.

Or you just know how to work on cars and realize the problems sound worse than they really are.

The n54 definitely has some issues but they're technically small issues to someone with engine knowledge and a little bit of knowhow.

common issues:
Water pump- 500.00 bucks and most people don't know how to do it and won't
Fuel injectors- Not as tricky but still don't like to work on their cars
Fuel Pump- Recall and has 120k warranty on it
Carbon build up- Im sure no one has a walnut blaster in their backyard.
Turbos- Im sure 90% of people won't even attempt this.

So what your saying is true most of the owners will do this by themselves...


Also im not biast just hate that car. I own 3 bmws and owned over 12. My family owns all BMWs and I love them. I have 10-15 buddies with the 335i and every single one loves their car but always complaining about it. I swear every time I see them they are in a loaner.

Lets break these out from 07&08 n54s and 09 n54s.

Water pump- fine on 09s, somewhat of an issue on 07s and 08s.
Fuel injectors- fine on 09s, issue and recall on 07s and 08s
Carbon- as more car companies go to DI, this isn't just a bmw issue.
Turbos- Wastegate rattle is an annoyance but a lot of people are pushing turbos to 100k with upped boost too.

Don't forget about the 07 and 08s and the serpentine belt hitting the subframe and the valve cover gaskets.


If people don't do their research prior to purchasing the n54 I guess I don't feel bad for them if they run into expenses that aren't known on this car. I would never buy an 07 or 08 n54 but the 09s seem to have most of the issues fixed besides carbon.

All the problem the pretty op describe here are shared by NA engines. The N54 adds its direct injection and turbo related issues, but the N52 are far from problem free (after all, the engine is mostly similar, with turbo added and tweaks).

Was there a recall on injectors for the 07 and 08 cars?

I bought my car used. Called dealer (where the car had been serviced) before closing deal. Dealer said no recalls due on that car, but also had no record of injectors being worked on. Only warranty/recall item done on the car was HPFP. Rest was just maintenance.

Am I due some injectors?

During the HPFP recall i presumed they replaced some of your injectors also... becoz that is what they did on mine during HPFP replacement... you can check the papers if they provided it to you... it should be stated there during maintenance and recall records....

oil housing gasket is about $35 and is three bolts. takes 20 mins, indy. shop would be much cheaper

Funny thing about that. They refuse to show me the full list of services. Said it's state law or something...can't show me paperwork of work done for a prior owner. Sounds like BS to me...

But it probably comes down to...I didn't buy it there. When I said I had a newly-acquired used car, the SA quickly asked if I bought it there. When I said no, from the Range Rover dealer down the block, the tone of the conversation degraded very quickly and he treated me like crap from then on.

I didn't read through the complete thread cz its quite long.. but if you haven't been to a shop already, try Four B in Santa Clara. David has worked on my car before and he does a great job. He is an enthusiast himself and has his own M3 and M5. I had my oil filter housing gasket replaced there before for which he charged me around $300 and he quoted somewhere between $500 - 600 for the valve cover gasket. I'm sure the tranny fluid won't cost that high either.

What I mean was the 07 or 08s. Should've addressed that. Also I don't mind the N55 engine my sister has it and no problems.

First off we don't have carbon build up. Water pump every car gives out but more frequently on the N54. Turbos we lack. Fuel injectors I havn't heard any issues regarding this. Fuel pump is on point on the e90 unless you never fill up gas.

Im not saying its problem free. Its way less problem free than the 335i I am saying. They are maybe 1000 threads on the problems of the 335i's and maybe 100 on the N/A ones.

At the end of the day my opinion doesn't matter all im stating is facts. I love these cars and hell driving a 335i with mods is like no feeling ever. Would I own one? Hell no. If it was a 2010+ 335i I would. I like the N55 engine.
