Conti Sport Contact 5P - If you have them you need to read this !

Not wishing to scare anyone, but thought it best to post what has happened to me, could be just a one-off (or rather a four-off, in my case).

I have 235/35 ZR19 91Y XL's & 265/30 ZR19 93Y XL's, fitted to 8.5J & 9.5J wheels, they have done 7600 miles, have been run @ 39-41psi, and checked regularly, (I even check tyre temp before checking pressures FFS !).

I have discovered that all four tyres have splits/cracks, in the bottom of all the three wide grooves in each of my tyres, they are 3-4mm deep and go all the way round, and down to the cords

The splits are perfectly straight and it is as if they have been put in a Lathe and had a knife held against them.

Reported this to Continental, and they are being removed and returned to them for inspection, I will obviously report back, when they send me the report.

So please get a torch, and have a careful look in the grooves, to make sure you do not have the same problem, luckily for me, have only been doing town work lately, and not using it to it's "full potential", I could easily be a different story ! I am sure you have all seen footage of what happens when a tyre de-laminates at speed !

Meanwhile back to the 18" and Run-Flats, forgotten how bad they were, anyone dithering about the decision whether to change or not, just do it.

To end on a positive note, the rears have equal wear across the tyre (no inner edge where here), with standard M-Sport suspension & geometry, Quaife, and Hartge roll bars.

Get out there and check them PLEASE.

Michael.

thanks for the heads up.
I've still got these on the front. Went through the rears with no issues (other than them only lasting 10k miles) I will have a look at the fronts and see if they are suffering from the same issue.
Very odd though as the 5ps have only had good reviews apart from occasional bad reports on longevity like me!

Only had all 4 tyres replaced for these last Saturday at £790

Thanks for the heads up, I'll be keeping an close eye on the tyres and what Continentals conclusion is following the investigation!

Don't hold your breath, the tyres have to follow the supply chain in reverse for some strange reason, so may be a while before I get the report, assuming they don't get lost by one of the three companies involved in the process.

I offered to courier the tyres to Conti direct at my expense, but they said no !

I also had to agree to fact that they may destroy the tyres in the testing process, and if they decide " there was nothing wrong with them Sir", I have no tyres and no refund

I hope you're not mixing them with run flats??!!!

Conti sport contacts are not great imho, however, 40psi??!!
That sounds like run flat pressure, I would think 33f and 36r at most would be fine.

Bloody hell Michael! I would say you're very lucky.

Thanks for the heads up.

Keep us posted on the report and what Continental has to say about this.

Very interesting I'm running 19's on my 335i second set I've had as I had 19's also on my old 330d.

Be interested to hear what comes of the tyre examination once conducted.

Door card on my E91 330d says 36f 39r for normal driving. I tried using less than that but the car felt really squirmy, almost as if I'd got a flat tyre.

Yes - the door card is telling you what pressure the runflats should be. Drop it by 3-4 if non rft.

I run 32 36

I tried. Didn't like it one bit. Put the air back in again and all was well

The way I see it, it's the air in the tyre that supports the weight of the car, NOT the sidewall. So the recommended pressure should be enough to support the weight of the car under normal conditions. The RFT sidewall should only be there for support if the tyre fails.

With my non run flats, I found the pressures for run flat made the steering a bit stiff. Dropped them by 4 pounds both front and rear and the car drives great now.

Does make me wonder though if you were involved in an accident and they checked your pressures and concluded they were not set to the manufacturers spec.....

Wow, good to know, not time to panic though, Continental makes great tires and this is clearly a defect. Scary though, but Continental will fix it I'm sure. Still though, makes me want to wait a little on these as I was planning on spooning them on when I pick up my 335is. Will be interesting to see if there is a recall.

My experience was different, I found that increased pressure was the answer for Continentals. There's a balance to be had right around 40psi rear 38psi front from what I remember in a coupe driven hard anyway.

That sounds really low Dave,I always ran non run flats at 38-40, any lower and it seemed far too squishy.

I think a bit of squishy is good though. It gives bite going into corners. I do think we get so used to the ultra hard run flat that when we go to a proper tyre we try and get it to feel similar.
Jump in an M3 on Pilot Sports and that also feels a bit squishy compared to an M-Sport in run flats.

If my tyre pressures were too high, I would not be getting even wear accross the tyres, they would be less tread left in the middle of the tyre.

NSF: 3.5mm 5.0mm 4.0mm

OSF: 3.5mm 5.0mm 4.0mm

NSR: 3.0mm 3.0mm 3.0mm

OSR: 3.0mm 3.0mm 3.0mm

If I remember correctly, other long term 5P & NRF users like Tony (E92Fan) Ian (Hotcoupe) and several others run/ran very similar pressures to me.

Under inflation, along with negative camber is what causes inner edge wear on the rear, which from my wear figures you can see I don't have, so I must be doing something right .

That's fair enough.

I'm very surprised though, 7 odd years ago when I was swapping the run flats on the 535d it was still a grey area, and I spoke with Michelin and they said you want to be at least 10% lower with normal tyres compared with run flats, pressure wise.

But maybe things change, more with the run flats than normal tyres.

But Ian didn't you have wider than stock tyres so need higher pressures?

In any case - I'm keeping an eye on this topic given I run the 5P's !
