Servicing at a non dealer and suggestions?
Hi everyone,
This might sound silly but can I start to take my car to an independent shop only now for all work to be done after my cars out of warranty? A warning light has came on to change my brake fluids, and my car is out of warranty now. The dealer will cost too much and since it's out of warranty do most people take it to a non dealer to service? This is my first car so I'm a newbie and I haven't taken it to get serviced since I purchased the car. I prefer to keep the car in one place so the guys know what they're doing as long as they can do everything, and are honest. Will they be able to change the fluid, then do all minor/major services, and also reset the warning lights? Or do people usually just stay with the dealers? Or switch between the two for different types of servicing? Any suggestions around Sydney south west of people who are good, honest and well priced? I was thinking of Advan as that's the closest and seems people suggest them. Any opinions on 'peak performance' in parramatta as someone i know mentioned it but would like further opinions. Also with the brake fluid servicing light coming up is it sfe to drive for another 3-4 weeks perhaps? Thanks in advance..! |

Where a outs south west are you? I go out of my way to Bavarian engineering, at tarren point, they only do bmw and know their shit, really good customer service. I've been to many places an most just take your money, wankers, however people on this forum only go to trustworthy places, so anywhere that's recommended here

Advan! Pete is a great person and will answer any technical questions you might have.
Any workshop that has an Autologic could reset your service intervals and diagnose issues that your car might have.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions sounds good was going to go Advan and I also saw a thread recently they opened saturdays which would be a lot easier, I'll probably end up taking my parents' car there too. Can anyone give a rough estimate the difference in pricing compared to the dealer? Just curious as I've never taken my car in for a service but heard it was like $800 just for a minor service. Does anyone know how long it would take to do the brake fluid service on iDrive? Thanks Last edited by orehuf; 03-24-2014 at 08:42 PM.. |

Nws man, I'm in Liverpool as well, nothing local, they are all shit lol.
What I do is buy my parts online and give it to them to install, e.g ignition coils, parra bmw (or rydlemere where they keep their parts) charge $100 each, independent Indy charged $88, online $45 ish. Same story with plugs, Litterly 1/4-1/3 the price, just get them to install it for you |

True lol that's a good idea, do you just search in the logbooks for the exact part number? Do you mean purchase online, or from BMW parra? Can you pm what site you use to purchase?
I'm a complete noob to cars lol but I'll try my best to source the parts and ask them to install thanks man heaps helpful |

Ring Advan or drop by to get a quote. Their pricing imo are very fair and reasonable. You could always buy consumable parts (plugs and coils) from overseas and get them to install it, but just beware when you factor in the shipping costs and exchange rate the saving differences could be very little.

Brake fluid change is a fairly simple procedures, any decent mechanic should able to change it for you. You can reset the idrive menu yourself, it takes less than 3 mins.
A basic oil service and safety check at the dealer on average costs around $250 to $300 (depending 4 cyl or 6 cyl diesel or petrol) and about $600 ++ for a major service. |
