Question Auction Price

Does anyone know if there's a way to check to see how much a car sold at auction? I'm looking at a car from a local dealer who bought it at auction...It would be helpful to know how much they paid for it.

Thats not true at all. Auction prices are about $2-3K below average retail price. I started a search for E90 330i about a week ago and they bring 12-15K at auctions depending on miles and packages. I see same cars already on cars.com anywhere from $14K to $18K

Depends on the car, its realy hard tto say, I bought my car with my dealer friend and I paid 16k for an 09 335xi (goes for 30k ish here in Canada). Just gotta get lucky, some other cars were selling for nearly retail price.

I bought a 2011 335d from a dealer here in S Florida 2 weeks ago for about the same price as I was seeing for similar cars at the Manheim auctions, and I got the CPO warranty from the dealer so I feel pretty good about it. It really depends on how compelled the dealer is to get it off the lot. In my case, it was on the lot for 90 days (the dealer had erroneously left off the online ad that it included premium package, navigation, winter package and upgraded radio) so he was ready to get rid of it.

Mr. Slacker,

Could you please site your reference on the data. $2 - 3K below average RETAIL or WHOLESALE?

It was my understanding that auctions usually brings prices below wholesale, but I could be wrong. Thanks.

Though it won't give you a specific price for any given car, you can use the wholesale prices/trade-in prices found on any number of websites as a rough guide. Some good sources:
  • Edmund's
  • Galves
  • KBB
Another useful resource is lease values. Compare the sum of lease payments made during the term of the lease with the lease's stated residual value for the car. The wholesale value should be something around the lower of the MSRP less the sum of lease payments, or the stated residual value.

The one thing you can be certain of is that he markup on used cars is far higher than that of new cars. Dealerships can stay in business doing nothing but selling used cars. They cannot do so selling only new cars.

How do I know that's so? Look around. Have you ever seen a car dealership that does nothing at all but sell new cars? If there were money to be made doing nothing but selling new cars, there' d be businesses doing just that.

The fact is that the high profit margins are in service and used car sales. That is so for many reasons, not the least of which is the difficulty consumers have in obtaining the selling price -- at auction -- of used cars.

All the best.

Depends on the economy too, in Dec 2008, I bought by '06 325i with 30k for 16,000, which I think is a steal.

^ this.

OP, Offer whats its worth to you AFTER a PPI.

There are no two used cars that are equal!

I would pay a premium with records or a great PPI.
