If you learn the processes correctly (i.e. buyer/seller rules, paypal policies) you will be at no risk for losing money or not being able to return something.

Paypal/eBay won't always resolve all the problems.

Call paypal and speak with the people there. Once a case is opened, make sure you take screenshots of all e-mails, forum pms, eBay msgs, etc. and upload them to photobucket (or similar) and then to your case.

Next, calmly explain everything that's happened to the claim specialist, and ask for a timeframe for which it will be resolved. Once that timeframe comes, and if you still don't have a refund, call and explain yourself again, they should do it immediately.

If selling, save all shipping receipts!

I shipped an iPhone 3GS last year which someone in India purchased for about $700. They message me 2 weeks later and say they got an empty box. Of course when they contact paypal/eBay, their original payment gets deducted from my PP account while everything gets resolved. I uploaded my original shipping label with proof of weight, and 3 calls and about a week later, money was back in my account. TBH I have quite a history with paypal so it may be easier for me to get out of similar situations, but I'm sure if you're honest and kind to the people there, they will help.

When buying/selling through paypal, I do not see myself in a situation I can't get out of with no losses. Also, I never pay as gift.
