if you have 6mm strut clearance you can use a slightly higher offset or slightly wider wheel if the added width towards the inside isn't more than 3-4mm or a combination of the 2. It all depends on what you are looking for: wider tire, more flush.
For instance: You have 6mm strut clearance and approximately 5mm gap on the outside. You could go .5" wider in tire or tire and wheel but beware of the rules above. whatever you add or subtract needs to be understood where the width goes or gets taken away from. The offset moves the complete width close to or farther away. Brake clearance is a variable also but rarely comes into play unless you have a big brake kit.
