While I do enjoy driving a manual (and have been doing it most of my driving life), I don't really think an e90 has the right character to go along with it. I enjoy an MT because of the connection to the car and the driving experience, and to me, a 335i is a bit too refined, heavy, and clumsy for that. An MT is much better suited to something light, agile, and raw.

There is nothing like easing a 6mt up to 5 or 6k

and slipping her into the next high gear to let that silky smooth I6 repeat all over again. The Japanese call it "Jinba ittai." Horse and rider as one.

This is actually a good point. I don't think the car is raw. He'll it wasn't designed to be so.

Once the snow thaws completely, and I go golfing in the mountains... the drive there will make me miss a manual tranny for sure

Love my Paddle shifters, tired of hearing stick shift is for real drivers... Yeah and ulcers are for real men and don't want to treat them and keep drinking martinis. I have driven both, with my life style and driving habits love the paddle shifters. With stick shift your right hand is tied up and left hand on the steering wheel, with automatic my left arm is on the wheel and my right arm is pushing down on her head... Oh wait lol

I drive a 328i xDrive, 6 cylinder, non turbo, 6 speed manual, no nav, no clever electronics, no mods, basically just an engine and transmission with nice road manners and quality build.

The 3 series are great driving cars whether automatic or manual, whether naturally aspirated or turbo and more importantly, they truly have character.

I can agree that the automatic is more efficient, more comfortable in traffic and I recognize that less than 2% of autos sold in North America have manual transmissions, so it must be true.

But, back in the '60's, long before many of you we born, I drove an Austin Healy 3000, naturally aspirated, in line 6, manual transmission. For me that Healy had a fun factor that just hasn't been duplicated. That said, my current 3 series comes close and really don't care about 0-60.

As inefficient and inconvenient as manual shifting might prove to be, I find the the BMW manual transmission to be ever so sweet. The combination of the inline 6 mated perfectly to a 6 speed manual in a ride with great handling just puts a smile on this old guy's face.

I miss driving standard for fun, then I recall driving my stage 3 clutch in 5 o clock traffic and I wished I had an auto, auto is faster auto is easier auto is better.

i waited six months for my purchase ( didn't want to get stuck with an AT )
drove from prescott arizona to bakersfield california
buying a six speed manual was a must for me
IMO the car behaves better, just feel like i have more control of the car.
if your going to modify your bimmer do it on a 6speed mt

1 out of 5 times at most. It's called standard for a reason, with all the technology and improvements in automatics, I don't think I'd ever go back again..

Yep. I actually prefer 6MT in stop-n-go. More balanced and the AT 335i has an unusually high brake pedal which makes AT suck even more during rush hour.

This is the first personal car I have bought that WASN'T MT so it has been an adjustment. There are times I do miss the MT, the AT sure is not as smooth, that's a fact. I have learned to drive it smoother and then just recently I have begun to drive it a bit more like a MT. I have a short downhill road I turn onto at home. In my R32 I did it higher RPM's with lots of gurgling, never more than 2nd gear. I am driving the 3 that way now and the higher revs make her a bit smoother.

This is from another thread on this same section. These are the correct factory 0-60 times:

335is DCT 5.0

As far as BMW's numbers being off - if so they are going to be off by the same amount equally for all their tests. They have no reason to make the AT seem slower than the MT since the AT is a $1500.- option until recently. Plus, it's what the dealers want to stock.

Sure for traffic at times i wouldn't mind an AT, however i love the control you get from a manual, engine braking in particular. I have definitely been accustomed to using the engine RPM and gearing to judge entry into a corner, with an AT this is completely useless. And most of my driving is like this, so as much as im sure an AT is more efficient for driving pleasure i am going to look specifically for a MT, however with so few of them around it might not be the case.

No I don't regret getting an auto. My last two cars were sticks and I drive in la traffic all the time, and while they were fun to have I was really over it. And like someone mentioned with DS I just flip the fear lever over towards the left and I drive it when I want more verb in my car which is pretty much most of the time!

with the AT, can you put it in a mode that will force you to use the paddle shifters or shift level manually for the vehicle to change gears?

Yes, there are three modes. Full automatic, DS(full automatic but higher shift points, mine wont shift unless I'm over 3,500 rpm), and Manual mode where you would have to upshift, but say your in 6 speed and slowing down to a stop, it will downshift for you when the RPM get near 1,000. Coming to a complete stop in Manual mode, will bring the car to 2nd gear. I prefer taking off in 2nd gear, not much slower, but makes the gear feel longer. You can downshift to 1st if you want.

well it seems you can have the best of both worlds in a sense, AT sound a little better than the older economy ones.

Unlike the old AT, the car rev match for you when downshifting in manual mode. Its like heel toe for newbie Especially with the cars computer doing the work, its smooth and car is balance.
