Why did you get the 328 and not the 335?

I'll always remember someone intervening in the 335 > 328 discussion....he said I have a 325i, I might as well just shoot myself. Just thought that the comment introduced reality into the debate.

Why? I would say price, and the bad rep that the 335 had for over 3 years. Some people were afraid to drive their 335's on a 2 hr. road trip. Luckily, that's pretty much a done deal, and now 328's are having some of their own issues, so it truly is a to each his own type of deal.

I bought my e90 328i because I originally thought 230 hp/200 lb.ft tq was a sufficient amount of power for the car (NOT my current opinion); I think there is considerable torque deficit in these cars. However, the piece of $hit GM transmission alone is enough to deter me from a future 328 purchase...Next time it will be a 335.

i have a 328. i love my 328. i didnt get my car to win races. i just got it to take me to work but not have to drive a bucket of shit. my slow ass 328 still makes me smile when i look at it. ive had my share of fun cars in the past and this car fits exactly what im looking for currently... a comfortable daily driver that still looks decent.

Some people dont shop for "performance" but for a nice car that gets you from point A to point B. Many of my friends just buy cars they find a nice deal on.....they dont care if it has 200hp or 300hp. If you DO care about performance, then i would say its more of a money issue or i guess some people are afraid to deal with 335i.....but in reality its not such a big deal if you have warranty

Because the 335i was out of my price range. 24 years old and the 328i is payed off under MY name. Also, I have a mustang with a shitload of Parts and that to me is much better than beating up a $50k car. Mustang parts are so cheap, gotta love it.

And yes, I would love to have picked up a 335i the first time around but it was beyond my budget. Now I would love an e46 m3

It's the weight of the car. My 330xi is almost 3700 pounds. That's heavy as hell.

With all these features being integrated into cars nowadays, they will only get heavier.

The power and tunability of the N54/5 just makes driving our bricks around more bearable.

This. I drive a 325i because at the time I didn't need the power the 330 offered. I wasn't going to track it do anything in terms of performance and I it didn't make sense to me especially with having winter here. I want the driving dynamics of a 3er in a nice package, could are less about everything else.

Now with the F30 and everything being turbo-powered, I saw quite a few posts here saying that it wasn't totally necessary to get a 335 now that the 328 will be have a turbo (I guess for tuning).

if I wanted to go faster, i would go for an M3 just because I've always wanted one. But right now, the 328 is fine for me, plus I can always whip out the 600RR, which I do anyway once temps are in the mid-high 50's

I bought a 328 over a 335 for one reason: the HPFP. The uncertainty of having a car and worrying about taking it on road trips was enough to push me to the 328.

Check my sig; I've owned/loved driving both xi models.

Driven both i models; I say the E90 328i w/MT is the closest to a true BMW; lightest + NA.

Turbo makes sense given regulations/gas consumption, but I miss/will miss NA in the future.

The 335xi w/ZF is best as a DD wherever there is snow in winter.

Every car is a compromise, some more so than others.

BMW 3 remains best balance in my book.

my 328i e92 mannual offers me a great deal of gas expenses, approximately 9.5L/100KM, and I rarely race my car in a place where has numerals GTR/Lamborgini/M3 and etc. so price+hp+gas expense+great look=i love it

This is what did it for me too. I was shopping for a used 335i E93 and then saw the Nightline story about the HPFPs. That got me freaked out. I have had a car lose power on the freeway before and it was NOT a fun experience sitting in the slow lane doing 5mph when poeple are coming up on you at 65+ and trying to swerve to avoid you. Just the possibility of that was enough to move me towards a 328i. Glad it did too since I was able to get a new 328i E93 versus a used 335i E93.

I just purchased a 6MT 328i and I love it. I've owned a 93 318is and a 97 M3 and I like this new model the best. The 318 was a fantastic light car but a bit underpowered. The 97 M3 was great also but I made the mistake of buying the auto tranny (new wife wanted to drive it also). That ruined the car. I believe it had 240hp so the 230 hp in the new 328 is close and it feels just as fast. All are great cars, just enjoy driving what you have!

Another motivated by longevity/reliability--real or perceived. When it was time to purchase mine, I was of the mindset of keeping the vehicle for 10+ years...and understanding whatever I had would need repairs once out of warranty. N/A maintenance cost probably < Turbo over the long haul and I wasn't thrilled with reading about the HPFP issues (with the 335 and VW 2.0T land from which I came). It's been almost a year now and I remain truly thrilled with the driving experience each time I push the start button. I may be getting old, but the power is robust enough for my daily needs.

This is a similar argument to why people bought a 335i and didn't buy an m3. Sometimes it's money, sometimes it's because they wanted that engine, sometimes its just because they wanted the badge and looks, sometimes it's because they walked into the lot and fell in love with the first 3 series they test drove, etc etc. But I think more often than not, it's because of money. And I also think that people will defend what they drive and they will most likely tell you a reason other than money, even if it truly is because of money. Because people on the internet can lie without anyone ever finding out. For me, it was a combination of money and wanting a car I could tune and still get decent mileage. And the underlying reason is money. If I could afford the extra gas, insurance, and the extra cost of the car, I would have an m3. I could lie and tell you I wanted to tune my 335 to be faster than an m3, but if money wasn't an issue, I would supercharge an m3 and destroy tuned 335s all day.
