Scammers - techsupportmart.com - don't be fooled

My hotmail account messages recently became unaccessible and I called a UK freephone number that I believed to be hotmail's official support centre. The operator confirmed that they were the tech support for hotmail, twitter, facebook etc.

However, it was not the official support centre, it was the above con artists. The operator proceded to inform me that my account had been compromised and my network was under threat.

He ran a number of things on my PC to demonstrate when my network / account had been compromised (after I gave him remote access via www.showmypc.com) and wanted to sell me a number of packages which were all very expensive etc.

I made a note of his name and what he told me as I wanted to verify his claims with my brother-in-law, who is an IT engineer.

Subsequently all his claims were false and my PC / hotmail acct / network is all fine.

I have reported the company to Microsoft. Be careful and do not use these jokers.

No doubt the number was premium rate so they've still made money from you.

This is a fairly well known scam I'm afraid.

I've had one of these lot tell me they detected viruses on my PC even back when I had a work mac and personal linux box. Very funny with him telling me how he was from Microsoft and my Windows XP was compromised.

In that case he phoned me so I ran him along for a good 45 minutes by acting niaive before telling him to do one. Got some colourful language back ...

I haven't heard of the hotmail one but I get loads of calls from "Windows Service Centre" & "Microsoft Technical Support" etc telling me they have identified problems with my computer - they are all scams. Microsoft & Hotmail et al do not make unsolicited calls so my advice would be either hang up or, if you know what you're doing, keep them talking for 20 minutes & have some fun, but on not account give them personal information or access to your computer.

Perhaps you misunderstood what techsupportmart.com actually supports? On their website, nowhere does it say they're Hotmail's official support centre (and why would they be? Microsoft handles that directly). What techsupportmart.com does it help you setup your operating system in regards to Windows and Microsoft Office, not Hotmail. I'm not saying that the site is 100% legit, but it looks like you're unsure of their services.

If you needed help with a Microsoft related product, why not just contact Microsoft directly?

It's amazing just how colourful their language can get when they realise it is them that has been had, on one occasion I had about half a dozen of them joining in to rant down the phone & abuse me - it was satisfying listening to them rant about me wasting their time

Yes, me too when I was back in the UK. Received a call from "Microsoft support". Which was nice.

I couldn't be arsed playing with the Indian gent, so he was instantly told to F*çk off as I put the phone down.

They are rife at the moment, my friend who is not PC savvy at all also had this happen. Luckily I had warned him about it.

I've had the call that there is a PC virus going around my area quite a few times.

They are always from Asian call centres.

I know this isn't what the OP did but if somebody calls you, unsolicited, and you give them access to your PC you kind of deserve what you get.

The number was 0800 so free as per my original post.

A lot of people fall for the virus scam even though the scammers haven't accessed the computer.

Carlos, hotmail is being phased out and will be replaced by outlook. My hotmail account has been migrated. The outlook style is rather like going back in time to the 80s, very retro. No need to change your email address or do anything in fact.

He just means you like have to go to outlook.com instead of hotmail.com in future to get your emails.

I'm upset now, I have seen these scams all over the internet on display ads 'speed up your PC now' '30 threats detected on your system' etc but I have never had a call. I kind of want one now to wind them up a bit. Maybe they just don't like me or there is no 'virus going around my area'.

I would go to the clinic for that anyway. Maybe they would prescribe me android tablets

Why don't I get these calls? It sounds as good as baiting the staff in PC World.
