Valve cleaning
One thing I highly recommend is that after every 50,000km on your car get your valves cleaned.
Thanks to Dzenno"s recomodation Ivo @ columbus auto did a fantastic job on the car. Things I noticed right away with 100K on my 2007 E92 FBO Tuned car. - idle is now super smooth, before there was always hiccups, a little up down rpm crap fluctuation, etc. all gone now. - power - the car pulls faster for sure, revs better, I wish I did a before and after dyno. but I can tell after 5 years of driving the same shit around. Personally I will probably do it every 30K from now on if I keep the car long enough. Cheers |

It fixed my idle for about 2 weeks, then studders came back. I think the best preventative maintenance is spraying meth. If you saw Mr. 5's valves, they were pretty damn good looking compared to mine and many others. If mine looked like that, I wouldnt even bother cleaning.

Meth is such a good thing for the N54, I really feel that its a mandatory item.

Running meth would be good preventative maintenance. I have an idea...what about adding some valve cleaner in the meth/water solution. This homemade brew could be the solution to the DI woes. I may be doing this since I only have 40K on the clock and will open it up once I hit 55-60K to see if this theory works. Or better yet, how about someone that already had the valves cleaned try it for a few thousand K?

I do know though that even with meth, people still experienced a lot of buildup, just a bit less.

Read an interesting article about a 2008 Audi RS4 (DI Engine) with a similar issue where he ran it on a Dyno before and after cleaning, saw a 41 AWHP gain after cleaning, after 10,000 miles the power output was reduced 5%, he now gets his engine cleaned yearly for $1,200:
http://www.autoobserver.com/2011/06/direct-injection-fouls-some-early-adopters.html Direct Injection: The HPFP sends fuel to the fuel injectors, fuel injectors are in the cylenders, because they are in the cylenders it prevents the valves and intake from getting cleaned by fuel. The valves and ports get caked and clogged with carbon, the carbon can flake off and burn holes in the catalytic converter. |

A dealer can do it (I know for 335i they do it).. it's called walnut blasting and it costs $600 in the US BMW dealers. Wondering how much it costs to do it here. I will probably do it at around 160,000km or when the valves are so dirty that driveability becomes affected, which ever comes first.
