Restoring Jerez Black: After Wet Sanding & Polishing

I have two favorite types of cars to work on: (1) black cars, and (2) cars with heavily compromised paint (scratches/swirls). Combine these two and you will get to see what proper paint restoration is capable of achieving.

Restoring this car was a particularly enjoyable for me given how poor the paint's condition was. The trunk was the primary focus, as it had received multipled RIDS (Random Intense Deep Scratches) from having spoilers installed and removed. Just polishing the trunk would not be enough to correct the damage, so we opted to wet sand the trunk with 5 separate grades of paper.

Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
Lenses: Tamron 24-70 VC, Canon 70-200 f2.8
Trigger system: Odin Phottix

Car upon arrival; dull paint w/ little gloss:

Front wheel w/ baked on brake dust, placed on foam pads for protection:

Front wheel after CG Wheel Cleaner & polish:

Soiled carpets:

Carpets after shampoo and extraction via Mytee Lite II:

Measuring clear coat thickness on trunk (available in 720p & 1080p):

Trunk w/ intense swirling and Random Intense Deep Scratches:

After wet sanding:

After polishing:

Passenger rear door; right side before polishing, left side after polishing:

Finished:

Yes, the trunk had no orange peel after the sanding.

If you took the time to read, you'll see that I wrote the wheel was cushioned on foam pads.

This may be a n00b question but how do you take your 50/50 shots? Did you just wrap half of the door in plastic?

painters tape a line down the door and only work on the left side. Wash it and you get that picture.
