New gov't rules allow unapproved iPhone apps
'Jailbreaking' is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law
By Joelle Tessler

WASHINGTON — Owners of the iPhone will be able to break electronic locks on their devices in order to download applications that have not been approved by Apple. The government is making that legal under new rules announced Monday.

The decision to allow the practice commonly known as "jailbreaking" is one of a handful of new exemptions from a federal law that prohibits the circumvention of technical measures that control access to copyrighted works. Every three years, the Library of Congress authorizes such exemptions to ensure that existing law does not prevent non-infringing use of copyrighted material.

Another exemption will allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.

Even if they didn't, it's not like that would stop anyone.

Well, not all unapproved apps are pirated. Many legitimate (free and paid) apps are created and released on Cydia because Apple will not allow them.

Yeah, just like them putting pressure on Apple for the iPhone 4 fix issue. Thank God I didn't vote for those a-holes.

They also said consumers could unlock phones. I see it as a good thing for consumers, since they can now demand that their phone be unlocked without having to resort to alternate methods.

At least the government is trying to keep up to date (as much as possible) with technology.

Apple is still going to void your warranty if you do jailbreak. If anything, they should have changed that because even if they didnt pass the ruling, people would still be jailbreaking (myself included).

I want to get an iPad, but only if I can jailbreak it; and to void my warranty on something so expensive makes me but ill probably do it anyways

But if you restore they can't prove you ever JB. I was satisfied with my phone before I JB it but now that I have it's so much better, even if it's just for SBSettings alone - so much easier to toggle battery sucking functions on/off like bluetooth and wifi.

Unless it's a major hardware issue where the phone can't even get into safe or recovery mode it's possible to restore, so just do that before you try and reap any warranty claims

^Good point, i forgot about that. I have an iPod touch that i jail broke and its gone into restore mode on accident a couple times. but i just reconected it to the jailbreak software and it restored my settings. i cant imagine using it without jailbreaking. if i get an iPad i'll probably jailbreak it.
