Catch Can - How important is it?
Greetings everyone,
I have been reading up on the RR and McKinney Catch Cans and it is getting me a little bit worried. I am taking delivery of a new 335i very soon and I am wondering how important it is for me to get one of these contraptions installed.

I installed one shortly after buying my car......emptied it at 12,000 miles and found about half a cup of oil.
Recently replaced my intercooler and diverter valves and there was hardly any oil residue in the intake system. Is this important???? I think so. Why???? Because with direct fuel injection straight into the combustion chamber, the oil vapours from the crankcase coat the induction system and also the intake valves. There is no fuel going through the intake port to wash this oil residue off the valves and cylinder head. The high heat causes the oil to gum up and carbonize over time, which then negatively affects airflow and performance and I have seen posts where techs had to scrape off the carbon deposits by hand in order to resolve engine issues related to it. This is a problem with the VW/Audi platform as well, which uses the same direct fuel injection technology. So I think a catch can is a useful modification to prevent carbon buildup and in my case, it prevented a substantial amount of oil vapour from contaminating my intake system. Automotive manufacturers ventilate the crankcase back into the engine in order to burn off the oil vapours and comply with emission pollution standards. Seems like once they changed from intake port fuel injection, to direct fuel injection, the washing effect of gasoline and it's detergents was lost on the intake side of things. |

Wow, thank you for the PRO response. Things are becoming much clearer. I'm going to look into McKinney again. Their product seems quite solid.

Great answer. I've had a RISS Catch can for my car and been too lazy to install it. I'm gonna get on that Gotta practice what we preach, even if I'm too beat after work to bust out the wrench.

After taking off my intercooler and charge pipe and found all that oil in there, it was even on the tmap. Thats when I knew it was time for a occ.

So another stupid question. Does the addition of an OCC reduce the need for methanol injection?

Just don't go spending hundreds of dollars on what is a very simple engineering solution. I think the ebay units are just as effective as any of the "premium" catch cans on the market.

Ive been doing a little research on oil catch cans since seeing this thread...and it appears they are nearly ALL chinese re-labels. Aside from a select few (Crawford, ARC, McKinney)...and I could be wrong on those. Is there a legit supplier that makes a tank? For example Setrab, Spearco, Aeroquip, etc.
Want a RR/Greddy/Cusco OCC, click below: http://www.chinasuppliers.globalsour...Catch-Tank.htm

I read some other forums where guys are using air compressor filters. They get them at Home Depot/Lowe's for about $20 plus hoses and fittings.

For $100, I think it is a vital mod. I have zero oil in my charge pipe since I put in the catch can. You think about what is getting coated with oil and it is very concerning. Your intercooler, your piping, your T-MAP, etc. I just think it is a must mod on the N54.

I think I'm going to go against the grain and say if the BMW engineers thought it was necessary they would have put one in there. Honestly I only have experience with OCCs when running a big turbo on big boost (30+ psi) at which point its a very good idea. For our tiny little snails, naaaaa....
