Not actually my car - but a friend snapped this outside his apartment today. Anyone know how this could have happened?

Oil cap wasn't firmly seated or was never put back on is a possibility.
I did that once and oil got all over the manifold of my 84 Plymouth Reliant. Only way I found out was by looking in the rear view mirror and noticing a massive amount of smoke behind me. I pulled over, popped the hood, used my jacket to open it, and discovered a roaring oil fire -the flames leapt about 6' into the air. I managed to put it out with a fire extinguisher I borrowed from a farmhouse nearby. After pouring in two quarts of oil I had in the back of the car, and retensioning the carburetor spring, I continued on. That car lasted me another two years before blow-by finally killed it.

If the owner parts out the front grilles or fog lights, let me know.

LOL at the group of people standing at the bus stop just watching it burn...
My Eclipse GSX almost caught on fire while I was driving it once. The alternator relay blew with enough enthusiasm to start a small electrical fire. By the time I was able to put it out it was inches away from the battery. That would have sucked.
