Importing a New BMW from the USA

this has probably been discussed to death

but I didn't find a dedicated thread

here is my question:

is it a good idea to import a new BMW from the USA?

will the warranty / service plan still be honored?

what kind of costs will I incur? (DRL, brokerage, GST/PST, etc?)

which dealer to buy from?

thank you in advance

A - Depends on exchange rate.
-Warranty yes, service no
-on converted purchase price add - GST/PST + 6.1% duty+$3k to BMW for documentation and Canada compliance work + travel costs to pick up + about $300 misc import costs and paperwork
-can't buy new only used
-if CAD hits $1.10+US it might be worth it

thanks

I know that there are companies in the US that do all the work for you

you just pay them a flat price, and they deliver the car to you

anyone know which company to go to?

i don't think it's worth it right now (unless you get X5 or something that is build in north america to avoid extra 6% tax)... when USD was $0.90 CAD then it was worth it

It is probably still worth importing. BMWCA will charge you about $3k, and the 6.1% duty (NA on BMW's made in the US) works out to about $2.5K. The RIV fee is $200. Everything else is the same as for a Canadian car.

The regular warranty is the same, but US cars come with a service "warranty" that Cdn cars don't have. For the first 50,000 miles normal maintenance items (windshield wiper blades, oil changes, brakes etc) are covered, but you have to go to a US dealer to get it.

You don't have to go very far into the US to get a good deal. I bought mine from Towne BMW in Buffalo and saved about $11k over Cdn price. They sell a lot of cars to Canadians, and are familiar with the import procedures. US dealers are not allowed to sell new to Canadians, anything even slightly used is OK.

Is just harassment of Canadians importing from the US, but our Govt lets them away with it. Search back a few months. There are more details
