Just another day.....

Driving home tonight my car was misfiring. I only had a SES light and car wasn't running too bad. As I continue driving the car starts to stumble and I smell gas. Next thing the car stalls and when I try to restart the engine bay catches fire. The car was toast by the time the fire dept showed up. Comments.....

It actually combusted on you? I don't think i've ever heard of that happening without WW meth being involved. Did you have any sense of what was causing the misfire prior to this? The two could be completely unrelated, of course. So sorry to hear this OP.

unless you've previously told your insurance company about the mods, I wouldn't mention them. Act dumb and just tell them car messed up and caught fire. Not sure what happened and let them figure it out.

It has to be because I have literally never heard of a non methanol car catching fire just getting on it on the street... Doesnt make any since why no other car has done that except yours....You should have the bmw techs take a look and see what actually caused this and let us know

Most insurance companies will cover the mods as long as you have the receipts for them. I did have one company that required rider for such things ahead of time. Call your agent.

Car fires happen all the time - meth is very rarely a factor.

Gasoline is much more flamable, if op had a fuel leak (he smelt fuel) then its quite conceivable that this would be the cause of the fire.

I think I had a bad fuel injector cylinder#5. I believe this was the cause.

+1. Happened to me. Insurance has to pay out because nothing in the policy says "no mods allowed." I suppose they might say the car wasn't street legal, not how the car was represented, etc, but that is picking a fight and, depending on your jurisdiction, just begging for a bad faith claim.

That didn't stop my idiot adjuster from taking 20 pictures of one of those gag "warning, turbo equipped, sudden acceleration may cause whiplash" stickers my wife threw on one of the rear windows.

Either way, they paid out. In fact, I refused their first offer, and got 3k more for "recent improvements" made to the car. (tires, upgraded brakes, clutch, etc- nothing go-fast)

So, the insurance company may reimburse for mods-just not go fast mods?

Can you post pics so we can have a better idea of where the fire originated from?
