335i vs 5.0 Mustang test drive

I own a 2009 335i auto coupe w/the sports package, Michelin PS2s, Dinan stage 1 suspension, Dinan stage 2 s/w and the Dinan carbon fiber intake.

Curiosity got the better of me so I went and test drove the 2011 5.0 Mustang also w/auto to see how it compared.

OMG...what a piece of shit. The 5.0 was heavy, slow off the line, a considerable amount of play in the steering column, cheap plastic everywhere, the \"Shaker 500\" stereo was poor garbage, mediocre brakes. Absolutely nothing but the sound of the exhaust note was even close to being in the same league as my 335i.
In fact my APR modified MKV GTI was a better car. The 5.0 looked, felt and drove cheap. I was not impressed at all.

We are very lucky to be owners of German automobiles. I didn\'t realize how spoiled I was with the engineering and build quality of my car until today.

This is true, I had the same experience when I drove one. After reading the press and seeing how great it is, I went to test it out myself. Outside of the top end power and sweet exhaust noise, this is still the same old American junk. The interior without navi looks like an Explorer from the 80's lol.

so you are comparing a highly modified car to a stock car?

mods on mustang are cheap and plentiful. I've seen mustangs at the drag strip locally that have destroyed modded bmws...335's/135's

How can you compare the to cars? Isn't the mustang 20k less? you could buy a civic with the money left over...

Sure, so can 15K civics with built engines but does that by default mean they are good all around cars? The mustang feels like a boat and the suspension is amazingly soft, I have no idea how this car beat an M3 on the track because the car itself inspires no confidence in the driver whatsoever. I am thinking these "objective" publications that praise that car got somewhat of a kickback to praise a company that at the time wasn't doing so hot.

Exactly. Even my 335i before it was modified was in another league. I can't understate the difference in refinement between these 2 cars. The Stang felt like a big Mack truck. Our 335is are so much smoother and produce power instantly. Sure once it got up in the RPMs I felt the Stangs power but it didn't put a smile on my face. Good luck turning on a dime at high speeds in the 5.0. U better have a roll cage. I got out of the car and felt like I just had sex with a Mexican hooker. Ashamed and hoping nobody saw me in public.

Yeah. Deloreans are cool, but very under-powered. (This is what I heard, not from experience) I wish I could get to drive one..

There's an outfit in SW Houston that actually re-manufactures DeLoreans...they look better than new when completed, and they'll do powertrain swaps (the original Renault V6 isn't exactly a tire-smoker). I went and sat in one awhile back and they're kinda cramped for me, but cool nonetheless.

Dont be biased, from where the mustang came from the 5.0 is an excellent car and for $30k you cant beat it.

Did you drive the 5.0 with brembo package and leather. Its a very nice car and the braking is phenomenal. There is a reason it beats the e9x m3 on the track and runs the same times down the quarter.

I don't think I'm being biased. I was excited to drive it after reading all the reviews and seeing video of it going head to head with the M3.

I drove the 5.0 w/auto and premium package. No brembos but same engine.

Admittedly I did not rape the car to see how it performed at the edge but I got on it and it did not impress. Soft suspension, u really felt the weight in the turns. I guess I'm more impressed with forced induction, a more refined engine, a multi link suspension and the build quality of German cars.

For $30k new I'd rather have a fully loaded GTI or a used E46.

The stripped down standard interior is garbage i considered one, then came to my senses and bought a 335i

I am sure that it gave an impression of cheapness but I would take it engine over a N54/N55 in an heartbeat. M3 level, but with better fuel economy.

I had one as a rental car recently. It was fun to do burnouts and abuse for a week. But I do agree with you on the quality of the car in general, looks and feels cheap, hence the price point they sell them at.
