Can someone tell me what is the difference between the first mount (http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1321409015) and the second one (http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1332161726)
I think they are not the same - first one comes with the cover as well. Do you have part numbers perhaps? |

The second mount was one I recently ordered. My guess is the first mount is the first version of the kit form a few years ago. Reading the instructions for the first version of the mount you were required to screw the bracket into the face of the dash! I was glad that I can remove mine without any permanent damage.
The part number I used is this one http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/65900445990/ES256206/ |

So, your version is also oem bmw part? I can't see any cover for the mount, did you get one?
One more thing - is your mount compatible with other Garmin devices as well? For instance, i have 1490T. Thanks. Quote:

In the pic above without the GPS shown, the BMW mount / ball has the Garmin 1450T bracket snapped on it. Here is a good pic of the ball. |

The kit in this thread is for mounting a BMW Nuvi. Most of us mounted a generic Nuvi. All I used from the kit was the actual bracket and screws. I then wired a female cigarette power outlet to the car using the wiring diagram provided by the kit. Plug the Nuvi into the female plug. Hide the wire behind the bracket. I notched the dash rather than drilling a hole because the micro usb would not fit through the hole. Then snap your Nuvi bracket into the ball shown in the picture above.

Coding is only needed if you wanted the radio to mute when directions are voiced with the BMW kit. This is not possible with the Garmans. I did not even hook up the voice muting wires that came with the kit. I simply cut and taped them off.

Coding only require if u are using the BMW navigation device if you want the sound to come out the car speakers.
If you using regular garmin GPS, it does not require coding since sound is not possible through car speaker once coded. I coded mine anyways for shits and giggles and no sound from radio |

I plan to use a generic garmin that I have that does use the ball mount, but the ball in the bmw socket has this "little pin" sticking out in the centre... Does new garmins make use of that ? can I "shave" it off ? Mine (which probably is about 3 years old) will not fit in the ball if I do not shave that pin off. thanks !

I think you could shave it off without issue. The bmw ball w/ pin snapped right in to the Nuvi I bought a year ago. The mount has a hole for the pin to go in. I don't think it does anything except prevent it from rotating to far to the left or right. Any chance you have the Garmin mount upside down?

thanks for the feedback
It doesnt matter, I tried both sides and will not snap in with this little pin in there... I just wanted to double check before I shave it off because I plan to use my unit for another 2-3 weeks until I get the new one, and I was worried that the new ones may need this pin for something.

It won't fit without extensive modification of course. I have a Nexus 7 and it's heavier than the Garmin unit that this mount is intended for.
