Don't go based by year or model, if your going to order parts call the dealer and give them your vin # or you can trust a good website. I posted just before the pic of my 330 has a different valve cover gasket then the 328

So I changed out the sensor... car started fine, ran fine, code still on. It doesn't show on the dash... just when I scan it with my scangauge. I wiped the best I can on the connector... how else should I clean it? Should I spray some electric connection cleaner on there?

Excellent write up man! Helps a lot. I think I might have the same issue sometimes a slight rough idling and poor MPG mileage. Hopefully this will fix it. I just hope that's my problem lol. If this thread is still alive (after almost 2 years lol) any input on how checking that is my problem? Thanks

If your talking about the valvetronic motor. When I put it back in on mine. I had the battery disconnected. I reconnected the battery. My car is a 6spd, which i did was press the start and stop button a couple times before pressing the clutch so it wouldn't start. I would suggest removing the starter fuse or another fuse so you can prime the system if its an auto. I didn't attempt to start it without priming. I did hear a click near the engine when I primed mine, I believe the sound was from the valvetronic motor but i can't be 100% sure. Just be safe!!! Cheers !!!

Not at all. I had turned ignition on then waited for it to do its initial checks then started the engine.

Strictly4boosting,
I just finished the VCG and took me almost 7 hours. I have 330I and you're correct regarding the differences between our car and 328i. Btw, in your picture you had those ignition coil wirings tucked away far from the engine. How did you do that? i struggled to keep those Wiring away so I can put the cover back on. It looks like when they are tucked away like you did it will be so much easier to put the cover back on. |

Ya most of the time spent making sure everything is nicely tucked in and torqued down. Oh I had a very tough time taking the breather hose at the back of the valve cover. I don't want to break it so I did it carefully. Just when I thought I wanna gave up, it came loose.

Just wondering are the aluminum bolts for the 328i and 330i the same part numbers?
Anyone know what the aluminum bolts part# for the 328i ? edit: Looks like I got metal bolts. Just used a magnet to check and it sticks. Last edited by Zero_09; 10-19-2014 at 12:44 PM.. |

Did you get get all the oil off and what did you use? Also you did this before doing the DIY right? Kind of scary of you took the valve cover off and started power washing it... |

Today we worked to remove the valve cover gasket on our 2006 325xi (N52 engine). A month or so ago, I had the water pump fail, and so decided to replace that and the thermostat. While in there doing the WP/TS, I noticed oil seepage all around the passenger (right) side of engine. I figured that must be where the oil has been going! It seems that every 6 months or so I get the oil low indicator.
After reading on the forums here and there, it seemed to me what I had was a leaking Valve Cover Gasket. So, I ordered up the new gaskets and screws (mine is the model with the aluminum screws and cover - no plastic or steel). Today we spent a couple hours getting to the point where the valve cover is ready to have its bolts loosened. I work my way from the front left of the cover, to the front right. The fifth screw I am going to loosen (front-most on the passenger (right) side) is just sitting there, broken!!! I pick it up and sure enough it's busted in half! And, as I look, the oil seepage is coming from the area around this particular bolt! FML! Fortunately, I was able to use an awl to reach into the bolt hole and spin the busted tail piece out with little or no effort, no easy-out or drilling necessary WHEW!! At this point, we decide to go ahead and finish the job of replacing the valve cover gasket and other items - a couple more gaskets, new spark plugs. We will continue tomorrow, putting it all back together. I originally had a dealer change my oil, but have been doing it myself lately. And I think I recall the oil light coming on after about 6-12 months in the past. So I think, but can't be sure, this may have been leaking from the time I bought it (which was just a few months out of warranty). It is possible this is why the guy sold it to me. He was anal-retentive about oil leaks, and I suspect he might have wanted to get rid of it rather than pay dealer prices to have the issue repaired. I'll never know. |

2007 328xi E90 with 105k miles. Ran and performed excellently. Noticed a oil leak and discovered it was coming from the Valvetronic gasket.
Replaced Valvetronic gasket ONLY and spark plugs. Also wiped off Valve Cover with shop towel. I never touched or unplugged the Eccentric Shaft Sensor. Fresh spark plugs and all ignition coils attached and plugged into. Symptoms: Rough idle after reaching operating temperatures. Blipping throttle works fine. Start up is fine. Im getting Service Engine Soon light. Prior to working on Valvetronic gasket change, vehicle performed perfectly. What would explain my symptom? Admittedly, I did not unplug my battery when changing the gasket. I checked the Eccentric Shaft Sensor....completely dry with no oil. I sprayed the front of the engine with brake cleaner against the Vanos Solenoid plugs for a cleaning. Note: I didn't replace the motor...only the gasket. Trying to improve the idle performance, I rotated the hex insert behind the Valvetronic motor. Im getting a rough idle but better than before. Before, I was experiencing a rough idle where my engine would flirt with stall and the ecu keeps itself alive by blipping gas. Since Ive rotated the Valvetronic motor until a resistance is felt, the engine will come to rest at ~650rpms with "Service Engine Soon" followed by a P1415 reading on my code reader. I did not change the Valvetronic motor. Only changed the gasket. I've read that cleaning the VANOS Solenoids located at the front of the engine with Brake Cleaner works. Again, my car ran completely fine. I didn't remove hoses as my scope of work was spark plugs and Valvetronic gasket (not the Valvetronic motor, not the Valve Cover Gasket). Anybody have any suggestions? |
