Rebuild time!

So after I wrecked my 08 335 coupe, i'm in the lucky position that I have been able to buy a new 09 335 DKG coupe. Same base setup.

I wanted to share with you my ideas and aproach. Please no tuner war... but good input to make it even better is highly appreciated.

Purpose of the car: 90% spirited DD (40.000km /y) 10 % racetrack (10 times a year)

Currently the car has no mods, it does has a DKG and the M-Sport suspension.
My car is maintained and will be build up by my local BMW dealer.

So the plan:

Exterior:

- BBS M101 BMW 19'' wheels 235/265 Michelin PSS (+ 17 inch for the racetrack)
- M-Tech body kit with LCI diffuser (Looks but mostly for the extra cooling in the front)
- My old heated and electric mirrors (Now I have the EU elephant big size non electrics..)
- Rear mini wing (I persionaly do not like the looks, but I missed some rear downforce on my 08, so it migh be an option, actualy I hope to componensate this by the highend JRZ shocks)
Interieur:

- Stinger DSI radar detection (Must have hahhaa)
- Add Bluetooth inc MULF
- Add CIC Business nav instead of profesional

(These last two I will do myself including the proper coding)

Suspension / driveline / brakes:

- Most M3 parts, i'm doubting about the rear arms, but It might be beneficial in combination with the JRZ/Eibach combo
- Eibach linear springs
- JRZ RS1 shocks
- Drexler LSD
- EBC Yellow stuf brakepads
- BMW Stut bar brace

Engine:

- AFE intake
- Procede Rev3
- Vishnu Meth kit + Chargepipe
- Vishnu Fuel Flex kit + maybe the vishnu flash
- Forge Diverter Valves (Yellow springs)
- Helix IC (Had excellent experience with it on my O8)
- AR DP's coated + resonated
- US 335IS exhaust (The open AR DP's + RB's + performance exhaust was just a bit to much when arriving at my customers :-), the IS seems to be a nice compromise)
- Robbeck Turbo's (He might be able to fix my old ones)
- BMW Performance Radiotor kit parts (I had an oil cooler on my 08, did not add the value I hoped, multiple parties adviced me to focus on the water temp management)

I hope that this will result in a very nice 500Whp dd track ready sleeper.

Any good ideas are more then welcome. The idea is to bring the car for two weeks to my dealer after all parts have arrived and first fix all the mechnical / engine / suspension parts and then have it repainted (M kit).

It will be a nice project after the "sadness" of losing the former one. :-)

Sounds like you already have a solid plan together
Just throwing this out there but you may want to wait for some info on the Vargas stage 3 turbos...

Yeah, I know but timing, they just come to late, and I'm not an early adapter, first have to see some reviews and a couple of months usage before I would consider them .... But they did took my attention.

I do not know what the quality and result will be with the Vargas secondly Rob offered me to inspect and optionaly rebuild my 08 RB's turbo's (Very kind).
This could save me quite some money.

So I think RB's for now.

Ohh yeah, there's absolutely nothing wrong with RBs and Rob is a great guy. Not to mention, there is always the unknowns associated with a new product.

In regards to the flex fuel set up, you're going to want to get the dme flash as well, trust me!

+1 on the ecu flash. lots of breathing room for fuel trims.

Rob Beck is awesome. He helped me out of a poor situation recently, and was able to get me the parts I needed insanely quickly.

AR Resonated DP's are very nice. I have the coated ones on my 1 series, and they work very very nicely. Only complaint is fitment can be a pita if you don't think in 3 dimensional space and since they are a true 3" DP, not much room is left on a 1 series.

My HPF intercooler is very nice, and it supports the factory style couplers. Don't know if it's a big issue to you, but it made my install way easier.

I'm not 100% happy with my Vishnu Charge pipe. It could fit just a tiny bit better. I think a little bit more length would reassure me that it's properly clamped on.

I think either CP-E or AA have a very, very nice supplemental oil cooler that has a reasonable install process. They also have track data to back it up.

Have you given any thought to a Wavetrack LSD? It seems to be very very nice, and I've not heard of the one you mentioned, so I'm not sure of it's characteristics.

I see, I think it is a great development., for me the challenge is the logistics across the ocean. I think I will first build the car, then perform some baseline tuning and then see where my trims end up. I might use e85 now and then, but the first pump is like 50km from my house. I see a lot of potential on the racetrack. But thanks for this explanation!

Most of the engine mods are based on my experience with my FBO/RB/Meth 08....
Rob is great indeed, very open en fast with his support and thinking in solutions... :-)

The AR DP's have been great sofar on my last car, I do switch from open to resonated, this is based on my exhaust adjustment I did myself the week before the crash, two vibrant resonator gave the sound a very nice touch.. a bit towards a v8 sound.

The HPF IC, does this one has the factory size couplers? The thing with the Helix is that it is a good fit, when I compare to the AMS or ETS is that I know what I will get with Helix, good fit, big couplers, no to much lag, and very nice IAT's, altough there are cheaper ones out there, the risk to buy something less good for let's say 100 dollar less is for me the rationale to stick with Helix. Also their proven knowledge about IC's and that most tuners "do not mind" to use them convinced me. Altough I'm very impressed with the quality of the HPF products as far as I can judge from behind my PC.

Vishnu chargepipe, I have had a lot off challenges with this one, till.... I putted all parts in a water soap mix and then I could push all connecting parts very well together. The reason to go with the less fancy pipe compared to some others is that they have tested their meth kit with this pipe. For DD reasoning a proven setup is worth quite much. But I have had easier to fit pipes. It took two men at my car to get it all fit correct.

Oil coolers, I use to have the AR oilcooler next to my stocker. It did not help me a thing on the racetrack. Different locations etc.. So after speaking to some thermal race car specialist he has looked up the cooling mechnisme on our N54 and did some calculations for me. His advice was to focus way more on the water temp this combined with the numbers I have seen with the PKK water radiator convinced me to start with this. If there are racetrack proof oil coolers out there I might add it to the car. Keeping things cool and stable/ predictable is key for this car, altough to cool is neither good.
I will start looking at CP-E and AA, do you maybe have a link for the data?

Regarding Drexler, Drexler is a German company and delivers the LSD's for the M car's. It is a clutch based LSD and I'm living close to the Dutch import company. My last installation was done by a morron and ruined a lot of things within my driveline, this time I will send the complete Diff house to Drexler and a qualified experienced engineer will do the installation and configuration. No more anoying noises for me hahaha. Quaife is a good alternative but not a clutch based LSD as far as I know. So nothing wrong with Quaife, but Drexler is very high quality proven product in the BMW arena. And living close to the source is a big pro for me.

So I was able to make a nice deal with the company that bought my wrecked car from the insurance company.

So we went of early in the morning (me and a BMW mechanic) to inspect the car and to see if we could recover the RB turbo's, meth kit and electric folding mirrors.

Cutting out the front of the car.

Taking away all broken and crunched front bars as they were blocking the lifting of the engine.

And we have a liffoff!

Took us 1,5 hour to take the engine out.

Adn there it hangs.... In a good position to take the undamaged AR downpipes and Robbeck turbo's off.

A 335 motor compartment without an engine looks like this:

And a wrecked 335 without a engine bay looks like this:

Fortunalty we have been able to take back from the old car:

- Turbo's (Perfect shape)
- AR Downpipes (Not damaged)
- Vishnu Meth kit, including most cables
- Electric folding mirrrors (My new car did not have this option)

So this saved me quite a bit of costs, thanks to Rob Beck as he pointed me on this. If the Turbo's would have been damaged he did the great offer to rebuild them for me, instead ofb buying a new set from him.

Also Andrew for Ar is realy thinking with me, but now I have to disapoint him a bit, as I do not need to buy new DP's from them. But I might be able to spend some money on decent oil cooling next to my water radiator.

During the next weeks, my new car will be completly taken apart to get build as I planned it to be.

More to come....

Next steps

So after some delay because of unavailability of my mechanic the build will start this week.

The final list of parts that will be installed on the car is:

- Rear mini wing (I persionaly do not like the looks, but I missed some rear downforce on my 08, so it migh be an option, actualy I hope to componensate this by the highend JRZ shocks) (Skipped for now, I do not like the looks)

Interieur:

- Stinger DSI radar detection
- Add Bluetooth inc MULF (Will finalize this after the rest has been done)
- Add CIC Business nav instead of profesional (Done, nice project)

Suspension / driveline / brakes:

- Most M3 parts, only the rear lower arms will be skipped, to much hassle.
- Eibach linear springs
- JRZ RS1 shocks
- Drexler LSD
- EBC Yellow stuf brakepads
- BMW Stut bar brace
- Steel brake cables

Engine:

- AFE intake
- Procede Rev3
- Vishnu Meth kit + Chargepipe
- Vishnu Fuel Flex kit + Vishnu DME flash
- Forge Diverter Valves (Yellow springs)
- Helix IC (Had excellent experience with it on my O8)
- AR DP's coated + resonated
- US 335IS exhaust (The open AR DP's + RB's + performance exhaust was just a bit to much when arriving at my customers :-), the IS seems to be a nice compromise)
- Robbeck Turbo's (Old ones were still in a good shape)
- BMW Performance Radiotor kit parts (I had an oil cooler on my 08, did not add the value I hoped, multiple parties adviced me to focus on the water temp management)
- AR Oil cooler

So currently I have the following parts ready for installation:

Meth kit in the box, Vishnu Charge pipe with Forge DV's, Downpipes

RB modified turbo's, downpipes, AFE intake

My old mirrors, Setrab AR Oil cooler, Steel brake lines, BMW Strutbrace

And finally the perfect designed Helix IC.

The rest will be done in the next week.

Both Helix as Vishnu but also RobBeck did a great job to get everything send over in time to my country. Rob from Helix really went an extra step to get all pieces and have send them on time. Great to work with such great companies. Rob as stated before performed a remote analyses by pictures and movies and saved me a lot of money with his honest opinion that I could reuse the RB's from my totaled car. He was even willing to fix them in case they would have been harmed by the accident.

Next week my current shocks will be send to JRZ to have some parts of them transplanted to the JRZ shocks, DME will be send to Vishnu for a flash and they will also send me the flex fuel set and a Rev3.
My Diff will be picked up by Drexler and they will install the LSD and return the complete diff to my mechanic.

I'm pretty excited as it is realy luxurious to have the ability to do all over in the best way possible.

Will post more pictures when things start to move. Also I hope to provide you with some nice reviews about the products used. Feel free to ask specifics so I can add info to this thread.

Sorry to see what happened to your last car, but good to hear you're taking it in stride. This coupe will be a beast when all is said and done. Musta been quite a relief to see the RBs untouched when you took the block out.

It took me 3 days after the accident to make the decision that there is no alternative platform that brings the same combination of power, handling, costs and comfort...
So I'm very happy that I could find the same base model and that my insurance did no make a big hassle about the payment.
All together I'm in many ways lucky:

- No personal injuries
- Found the same car, but with 100.000km less and 1 year younger
- Car has a DKG (Hopes it keeps up with the torque)
- I have now the ability to even further finetune the setup by adding the JRZ shocks to the mix.

The guys at JRZ are really great to work with, they even offered me to finetune the setup in two ways, after the car is done:

- Street configuration for DD
- Track config for racetracking

I'm a happy guy for now, I hope I will stay that for the next two weeks as all will be done.

Great thread and good luck.

If I were to offer some advice, I would personally send those downpipes out for a ceramic coating, like swaintech or something similar. They may even be able to do other products like the turbos if you had interest.

I just figured while everything was out it might be a good opportunity to maximize efficiency.

Good luck!

Regarding the coating, the DP's have been coated in the past, they are just a bit dusty.. Do you think it would make sence to have them coated again? They are 2 years old.

I think I will start to clean them a bit tommorow and see how much they are worn...
If I understood you well, you are opting to also coate the turbo's? I have heard about that in the past, but never have seen hard numbers about the effect....

Sorry, I couldnt tell if they were coated or just oxidized. They might be OK.

If you check out that swaintech website they have a lot of info. You'd be amazed on the stuff they can coat. Turbo's, manifolds, pistons, heads, you name it. Perhaps they can relay more info to you on expectations.

I know that is one of the things I would do if I had any stuff out and looking to maximize efficiency. The exact numbers and benefit I'm not sure but it's something to look into if you have the means.

Not to start a war, but why did you stay with the piggy when COBB is really peaking with their flash (smart that you're getting the Vishnu Flash) & ProEFI has HUGE plans for the N54 in 2013 -- A complete engine standalone (that'll smoke every tune currently offered) capable of seamlessly running Pump/E85 blends, in addition to a new intake manifold with port injection??

Glad to hear you're safe & was able to get back into a similar 335

Oh no! LOL

I can probably answer that. But this person had Vishnu previously and it integrated well with methanol and upgraded turbo's way before Cobb did. Especially since it was a PWM kit, so it makes sense to stick with it.

Nowaday things have changed but there is no disadvantage to the PROcede at this time. Many high HP users are still integrating a piggy and flash technology to maximize benefits. As you know this platform moves at a interesting pace when it comes to tuning,so the future will always bring advancements and opportunities for better ways of doing things.
The Flash and PROcede with upgraded turbo's, methanol, flex fuel make a nice integrated system. Just another way to a kill a chicken I like to say.
