Rear Humming Noise

2007 328xi

Rear humming noise on the driver side. Hum is persistent at speeds of 80-120km/h (50-75mph) when gaining speed or coasting. Noise disappears at any speed outside of that range (above/below). I also have slow leaking tires in the rear which will be replaced within the week.

Humming noise doesn't sound like grinding/metal/screeching. Noise is subtle and can only be heard on silent drives.

Any input on what it might be?

hello bennye90,

don't throw rocks in me since it's my first post here, but still:

- could be bearing noise?
- since yours is xi , could be any differential problems?
- faulty tires or unbalanced wheels?

Welcome to the forums!!

Thanks for your input, the last thing I am hoping for is a differential problem. I suspect it to be one of these in escalating factor

random occurence > tires > balance/alignment > struts > bearings > unknown random problem > differential fluid > diff replacement

it could be the bearing of one of the wheels.

i'm saying this because i experience the same problem with humming, like vum vum vum (lol) at around 60-70 km/h and goes away at speeds below/above one mentioned.

my mechanic told me that i shouldn't worry about it, worst case scenario will be that the wheel will get stuck while driving, but that will imply that the noise gets too loud to stand it while driving before this will happen.

anyhow, maybe other user can come up with any other ideas.

cheers!

Back from a 70km commute to home and back to work. Just throwing some confirmation info:

- same humming sound is still persistent at 80-120km/h
- confirmed again speeds outside the range makes no noise
- used DS manual mode and confirmed it is not dependent on RPMs, downshift and revup to higher rpm with still the same humming sound
- speed seems to be a the dependent with the most noticeable hum reaching 120

Still would like to get others input on this Thanks!

If you have a video or sound clip of this noise, it could help us diagnose the humming.

I have the same issue with my car at present.
The humming is evident whilst I drive and stops when stationary.
I have had my tyres replaced and wheels balanced and tracking done.

I'm assuming bearings will need replacing.

Just wondering if you managed to sort your issue?

My Issue was linked to rear driver side wheel bearing which has got rid of the hum.

Thanks

currently, I have the same issue.

- installed new and balanced winter tires, does not help.

Noise is present no matter what gear / rpm (but starts @ 80km/h til 120 km/h)
When turing left/right, noise stays the same.

immediately stops when going slower than 80 km or above 120
