Stop worrying & let the car car do its thing, it'll tell you when it wants oil & when it does add a litre. Why would you want to keep constantly checking & concern yourself over how much of one litre of oil has your car used
The oil sensor not only measures the level it constantly monitors the quality of the oil, what dipstick can do that?

My 2007 e90 N54 doesn't require any additions between the 9K mile oil changes(Redline). I currently have 125k on my car and it was a Sept. 2006 build. I did an ED when I bought the car back in 2006 and had to drive her hard through Europe (2600 miles) those two weeks. Some of those on-ramps are short in Europe. I only had a couple hundred miles on the odometer when I accelerated all the way up 155 MPH multiple times. I have never babied this car. When she is warmed up, I drive her hard.

It isn't quite that "binary".

The sensors look for oil levels in the sump.

You can fill the car with oil during a change, and assume that you have the oil level correct because the car reports it so after the change.

The car reports the oil level in discreet increments. You could be shy of half a quart down, but right on the edge of the sensor reporting threshold.

You drive around, and sometime later notice that your oil level seems too low. Top it off and all is well from them on, as I have seen after an oil change.

This is why the question asked before "How MUCH oil did you add" is so pertinent.

Anyway, if the car asks for oil, add it, note the mileage and see if you get another oil warning later. Then check the mileage difference.

i am a bit worried because my bmw that has no oil leaks consumes more oil than my leaking honda. And as you can see from the people replying in this thread, they dont have nowhere near the same oil consumption as me. so yes im a little worried.

And i will add oil whenever the car needs it. I have no choice. My goal is to figure out if its in fact normal.

yes i sort of keept a log. I keep all receipts of products and services that i buy for my car and write the mileage and date when done on it.

i purchased the car at 12/1/17

previous owner told me he changed the oil and serpentine belt on 11/11/17

the oil change indicator came on shortly after i purchased the car

I changed the oil to Pennzoil platinum euro 0w-40 from walmart and sparkplugs at 12/13/17 at 136536 miles

Low oil level light came on at 1/4/18 at, added 1 quart euro 0w-40 and 1 quart of lucus oil stabilizer 137876 total distance of 1340 miles of adding quart. The oil level indicator is on max

p0171 turned on at 1/5/18 and haven't driven the car since.

p0171 is a lean condition so it could be a vacuum leak i dont know. I ordered a smoke machine should be here in 5 days. I can use that to also check the ccv system.

So now see if the oil indication lights up again and at what mileage to determine if it is indeed using too much oil.

Because of all of the work, you don't know yet if oil consumption is excessive or not.

I change my oil around every 3,500 to 4k miles. I've switched the brands a lot though. My car sat for about a month and a half due to needing new brakes and a new battery right after I just did an oil change. Whenever I got my car back on the road, it says I am at half oil level. Other than that though, all of the other oil changes I've performed have gone well and I was able to drive up to 8k miles before it said +1 qt.

I have the true 325 with the n52b25 2,5l 218hp engine that the internet calls one of the worst BMW 6cyl engines.

Lost about 1/4 from the display reading in 8 months & 5000km. Quite sure the bars are every 0,5l in the non idrive display. Also lost a bunch when I did the housing gasket so have to refill soon.

Dealer used some Mobil super 3000 dexos 5w-30. Not really worried about adding, the oil is very cheap compared to other items. Even the housing gaskets cost me 72...

I have visible oil leaks that will be repaired soon (328i 95000 Miles) so I add about half a quart of oil every 2 months or so.

How much oil did you add when you changed it? After the change, did the oil level read that it was full? If the PO changed the oil in November, then he didn't reset the indicator if it told you to do so in December.

When the car tells you the oil is low, it means that it is 1 qt low. If you added 2 qts of volume to the system then you have overfilled it.

When I change my oil, I'll put 6-6.5 quarts back in and see where the level ends up. Then I'll add a little more later if it needs it, or just keep the extra 1 in the trunk until the light comes on.

Given that you've had the car for like a month, just drive it and see how things turn out. I've had what felt like high consumption come and go on my car, but this is something that is measured over months and years.

Drive it until it says add 1 qt. Record mileage, add a quart.
Drive it until it says add 1 qt. Record mileage, add a quart.
Drive it until it says add 1 qt. Record mileage, add a quart.

Evaluate and look for your leak. I also have a leaky OFHG and VCG.

Doesn't overfilling often cause oil consumption to get even worse?

The oil level indicator only shows 1 liter/quart - idrive or not. Each bar is 1/4 liter. If you're putting in 2 quarts when it's 1 quart low, well, you're going to have a bad time..

Whatever it is that BMW uses. I don't do my own, I figure it's worth spending the extra 40 bucks to have someone else do it vs doing it myself.

I had no oil loss issues for the first 105k miles on my n54 FBO. After that point I was told that my oil pan gasket was weeping. I have started to notice that I do lose oil to the tune of 1/4 qt of oil every 1000 miles driven. I am now at 144k miles on the clock and it still needs 1/4 qt of oil every 1000 miles as per the e-dipstick. I have only been doing dealership oil changes every 10k miles until the 100k mark and then I switched to Castrol LL-01 0w-40 oil from walmart since then every 7500 miles. VCG was changed at 105k miles, OFHG was changed at 95k miles under CPO, pulley/tensioner/belt was done at 105k miles, front and rear brakes/rotors/sensors were done around 99,500 miles.

I have had other mechanics also confirm that I have weep/leak of oil from the oil pan gasket once they took off the under tray panels.

In the last month I have noticed a small dime size drip in my driveway when I park the car over night. I have also noticed for the past 20k miles that on a cold start my car is fine... but if I shut off the motor after a short drive to a grocery store, shop a little and then start the car again... i will get a small puff of black smoke that looks like it might be burnt oil coming from my exhaust... but thats all it would do. I was told that might be a sign that my valve stem seals might need to get changed eventually???

All in all the car runs well and no major issues to report yet. I might hope to sell the car around the 180k mile mark range just because I might want something new... but I plan to keep aggressive maintenance on this ride to make sure it stays road worthy. No codes or issues going on right now.

thanks for all the helpful reply guys. I smoked tested my car and found a vacuum leak very small crack on the plastic nylon tubing near the rubber hose on the brake booster line. i cant believe that little crack cause the computer to illuminate the CEL. bmw wants $80+ for that line. im just going to replace with a vacuum line from autozone for 1.50.

as for the oil consumption, it still continues. i'm almost at 2k miles since last refill, my oil indicator says im a little bit below half way mark from max level. I dont know if fixing the vacuum leak would atleast slow it down.

I'm starting to think this could be a pcv issue. from what im reading its located in the valve cover.

But before i go through all that trouble is there a way i can test for it?
