+1... I can't keep up with all this British slang... I'd better gen up on the lingo lickety-split before I find myself in barney.

I can keep up with the common slang from watching European shows like Top gear, 5th gear and some other shows. But some of it as you can tell is beyond me. As for today I will not be able to do post any news girls but tomorrow I will set aside some time to get a good contribution.....

What words are beyond you. Supply, and we will translate.
A "barney" - not a verb, is a spot of bother, an argument, rumbustious verbal sparring. |

I said a "barney" because the word isn't used in the way you used it. One doesn't get "in barney", one gets "in a barney". You have to accept it because it's our slang you want to understand.

well from what I've heard that was how it was used "you're in barney". barney= barney rubble= rubble rhymes with trouble = you're in trouble. the "in A barney" didn't make sense since barney is being used as a verb, not a noun... even though the actual word barney is a noun.

O.K. No problem. I have never, until today, heard anyone refer to it as "in barney". If one takes barney as meaning trouble, then logically, in barney, in trouble. But slang isn't logical.
If you want to use it your way, - it's a relatively free country, so go ahead. It's just that, no one says it over here. (Cue some wise-ass from over here to pop up and say it your way, just to prove me wrong.) |
