JBD or DTUK?

So my wife's been asking me for months what I want for my birthday in April, and all along I've been planning on getting an Evolve tune. Unfortunately, VS Motorsports went out of business last month, so I'm kinda stuck. I don't know that I want to drop $1200 on a Renntech, so I've turned from recoding to piggybacks.

The two options that seem to stand out are the JBD and DTUK. JBD is obviously quite a bit cheaper ($330 with CAN tool vs. $500) and more people have it, but the DTUK seems more adjustable and claims to control boost as well as fuel delivery. I figured I'd put it to the group, and see what the opinions are here.

Don't particularly want to remove and ship my ECU (especially not each time it needs a dealer update). Evolve was my previous choice due to both the reasonable price as well as being 2.5 miles from VS Motorsports.

I feel your pain. The logistics of it all weigh into my thinking too. And what if I move away from the DC metro area. Decisions, decisions.

Considering your previous affinity for Evolve, my vote is that you take a road trip on over here. Leave your place super early on a Saturday/late Friday, get here in time for a Saturday morning retune (and a warm welcome from our local d contingent), enjoy the sites with your loved ones for a day or two then REALLY enjoy the drive home.

I can't speak to DTUK as I've never had it, but Ron1n seemed to really like it. Personally, I think JBD is a pretty tough value proposition to beat (which is what I bought as a pre-tune stop-gap).

Our cars get so much power from tune or piggyback that I would find it hard to think that you would be let down by any option.

Have you considered JBD+meth?

For me, the JBD work perfectly.
The car pull really strong.
Can't wait to go to the dragstrip to see how it perform.
On my V-Box, it make 4.7 sec to 60 mph and 12.9 on the 1/4. (before the JBD the car make 5.8 sec and 13.9). Very nice upgrade for $300 !!!!

Yes JBD is EXCELLENT for the money downside I had read was that not to many cars can run at 100% but indeed a good option

I'm new so please forgive me if this was discussed previously, but what is going on with COBB? From the very small amount of info I have seen here, they just don't have a d tune (yet?).

I'm a bit paranoid about my warranty and I think a piggy back would be pretty easy to find, and a bit of a pain to take off. I also don't really want to ship out my ECU or have to go back and forth for re-tunes. COBB seems to have a pretty good product from what I have seen from the 335i people. Is there any news on whats up with them?

I think out of all options, the JBD would be the best bang for your buck. For the amount of power it gives it's a no brainer. Plus, why mess with these flash tunes? Aren't you afraid the dealership might find out and void your warranty? Get a piggy back and when you ever need to bring it in for service, just remove it. Done deal. Unless Cobb comes out with a 335d flash for their AP, I'm sticking with JBD for the convenience and price.

The ECU on our North American cars is encrypted, and so far no one has broken it. I'm not sure if it will ever be broken, simply because there isn't enough volume for the tuners to invest the time and money. So - don't hold your breath waiting for Cobb or any other OBD solution.

DD very true Lenny at RENNtech is begging to Get SOMEONE to UNENCRYPT our ECUs once done we can upload via OBDII port otherwise either JB or Bench flash will be the only way to get the most out of our cars!!

Return from a very long hiatus

Hey guys. I have been away from the Forums for months. Just invested in a new home and couldn't bare all the posts on new things for my D.

Piggy backing on this post, who has gone to Sterling, VA for the tune? how much is it, on Par.

Second question. I am looking for more balanced power. The JBD piggy back, compared to what I have seen from remaps, puts all the power at the top end. Do you guys find that remaps have been pull even when driving less aggressively?

I don't follow all the curves and maps and the like, lazy I guess, but I would agree based on my so-called "butt dyno" that the JBD does seem to add the most benefit at 60 mph + where it needs it most. The D seems to start to run out of steam vis-a-vis the 335 gassers as you enter the extra-legal speed zone. That guess of 60 mph and above may be not right; it may be higher; but I have never gone head to head with a stock 335 gasser to really know.

Yeah, I am looking for some improvement performance even when not running flat out. Evolve looks to add HP throughout the band.

Axel, you've had both. What's your thoughts?

As the piggybacks that make the engine run outside of factory parameters.. Does the ECU record the fact that it's been fuelling more than it should, or boosting higher than it should as a standard car?

I.e.. Will it be obvious that it's been running some sort of piggyback tune even after it's removed?

One of the more knowledgeable forum members (or maybe more cynical) answered that question a while back. As I recall his answer, after you clear the codes with your CAN tool, it is not obvious to the casual observer, but if the dealer really wanted to go after you for something he believed was caused by your aftermarket thingy, he could probably find clues. I have not seen that verified or substantiated by anybody, but I guess it could be true. It wasn't enough to stop me from buying a JBD. But I wouldn't do an ECU flash/tune while under warranty or maintenance plan.
