I have a '08 335 sedan. How do you check to make sure it is compatible. My car is SAT ready (plug is in the trunk). Would I have to take to a dealer to activate?

Usually the module is the same for 06-08, but after installation activation or coding is required. Either by a dealership (which is the expensive route) or a 3rd party coder.
