Edit- title meant to say dct- blinking iPad!

So, with my m3 wheel successfully fitted, I started looking at after market gearknobs with the 335d one being a bit ugly and cumbersome.

Nothing really took my fancy and all seemed overpriced, so mailed someone breaking an m3 and for £60 delivered this turned up.

So, no real idea if it would fit I did some googling and found similar threads showing you can get the lights working but all in America, and not this exact gearknob, but I thought if it fits it will look better, smaller and oem.

Little trial fit and fits physically. Just need to cut gaitor off and then fit my line up and secure to the alcantara boot. Just need to be brave now and cut it!

I've decided the trigger on the old one will make no difference except the gearstick won't be locked but think this is ok?

I'm going to fit regardless but getting the lights working would be extra cool, so anyone point me in the right direction?

The lights on the selector are powered all the time. Not just when the side/headlights are on. So a switched feed should be enough. Not sure how you will get the reverse gear/ Drive/Sport indicator section to light up though. If the standard selector didn't have these features.

Well, 5 mins later I had this,

And another 5 mins this,

Need to fiddle with alignment of the boot, but I like it!

Would look cooler with lights though?

Can't you tap into the ciggy lighter feed?

If i went to the cig lighter I guess I would have a permanent light which would be ok , but ideally would like to have all working as they should if possible! This of course may be a load of grief! I think tapping to orig lights would be best, but as you said it would be about the extra lights!?

Found a DIY under 'm5 smg knob retro fit'.

Not sure if it looks too complicated or not yet ?

Will have a proper read when not at work!

Looks a bit different! Don't suppose you want rid of the original? Mine has looked tatty since I bought the car - I'm guessing the previous owner wore a ring (or had corrosive sweat!).

It was heading to eBay! Every mod I do needs to be as cost neutral as possible. My way of justifying it to myself! It's actually mint. Pm if interested. If I put it on eBay and get no joy, you can have it for forum mates rates!!

This is the link to the thread regarding the wiring.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232777

Has anyone done this??

And thanks banzi!

Drove it today, and as silly as it sounds, felt great and thought it looked spot on!

So it still moves forward and back as original stick? not a wee tilt like the M3?

I gotta say, the original ones look shite! One thing I hate about mine, and ANOTHER reason to justify a 335i with DSG

Wonder if the 335i's DSG knob can be swapped for the smaller M3 one as it works the same?

All works as original, just feels a bit sportier! ( and a lot smaller). My old knob looks massive compared! Not something a bloke normally admits!

Only thing different is its not locked so no trigger to push to release from park.

To be honest happy as it is, but will see if I can get the lights to work FTW!

Yea i remember reading in that thread that the PIN connector for the M5 and M3 were different.

OP: how does the DCT knob fit onto the shaft? Does it spin or does it lock into place so that it will always face the right direction?

Think it will need a bit of research!! ( and probably my friend who's clever with electrics)

Fitted straight on and drove all today with no twisting so guess it's locked!

Need to double check to be sure ( so dont quote me yet) but if needed will apply some double sided tape or similar around the shaft to secure. If needed it will certainly be minimal.

Just checked , for anyone who may fancy changing their knob and it does twist slightly so I double sided taped underneath to secure!

eBay! Mailed a breaker of a m3 2009 and asked what they wanted for it. They said £70 posted, offered £60 posted and deal done. 2nd hand but arrived in immaculate condition.

Based just outside Ipswich, suffolk. Would happily pay if you fancied tackling the wiring!?

What is the Cic conversion you refer to?

I'm sure once you've done one, making a second loom would be a easy!

I will keep my eyes peeled for a cheap gearknob, to speed your necessity to make a loom!

I got the knob finally but.. There is alot of difference compared to the m5 knob as this has extra 3 wires... Looked at the wire and there is no label for them so its impossible to find out what the three extra wire if for.. Probably need you electrician frd to have a look?
