Porsche Cayman opinions?
Hey Guys!
I'm thinking of (TEMPORARILY) leaving the BMW family for it's German broski... Porsche. I've been wanting to get a 2 seater sports for next year and have somewhat narrowed it down to a few maybes and definite nos. I like the Cayman as it's a gorgeous car (and I cant afford/ won't get insured on a 911) and looking to invest in the gen 2 (facelift) model from 2010 till now. In black. And I'll black out the rims. So it looks like this: Does anyone have any good pointers on the cayman/ what to look out for/ alternatives to the cayman? (upto £25k) P.S All comments welcome! And I know I should probably post this on a porsche forum, but i trust you guys more.... |

I really like the Cayman despite the fact that so many people call them the Porsche Gayman . I've driven all 3 flavours (the bog standard one, S and R) The bog standard car is a bit dull to drive so I would go for an S at a minimum.
Don't care much for the black on black look. There's a black on black one down the road from my work and it makes the car look a bit cheap and chavvy. Personal preference though. |

Very very capable cars but....mate of mine who had one had his engine go pop and he's now in a 320d.....
Its not really a "common" problem, but it does happen.....so just don't think that Porker's are bullet proof - unfortunately all the performance brands seem to suffer their share of "issues"....

Gorgeous?? I guess beauty is really in the eye of the beholder as I think they are ugly as is the Boxster. However I have driven a friends Boxster S and it was a terrific drive. They are a decent package and go very well, in fact if they made them better looking I'd probably be in one now so if you like the looks, go for it.

I had one from new a couple of years back. I had the 2.9 which could do with a little more power, if you can stretch the S I would go for it as it makes a huge difference especially with the PDK gearbox.
The 2.9 needs to be spec'd, it doesn't even come with leather as standard, the S does have a better standard spec. The interior is very Porsche, basic but functional. If you can get one with a leather dash it's great, really makes the interior feel classy.. Again if you can get nav with the universal Audio interface it's really nice, full colour touch screen and you get all of the iPod function on the screen... I now have a 911 C2S PDK and I won't lie the difference is night and day, it's truly one of the best cars I have owned and it will be impossible to replace as the new 991 is just not as good. I just think the second hand values of the Cayman are just too high in comparison to a 911.
Granted it will be a couple of years older but there is too much temptation just to pay a little extra for a 911. I like the 911 Turbo idea but I bet they are really expensive to keep. As for insurance the people I know that have 911s pay really low premiums. |

I think the 997 values are going to get a little stronger, the 991 is just not selling plus its not as good to drive. The black cayman in the picture is a black edition and I can tell you they don't sit that low even with the optional 20mm drop of PASM, if you want it to look like that it will need lowering |

I'd have to agree, decent early 997's are well within your £25k budget now. I'd go for the real deal 911 rather than the Cayman, although do be aware that even the newer 911's have suffered from engine failures so I wouldn't touch one without a decent warranty.

Stunning!!! Looks great! How does it drive? (rhetorical q i know!)
That rear is so gorgeous too! I found one for 33k Im sure by next april/may I'll find something in the late 20's...! Did you know, my insurance is approx £300-400 cheaper on an 911 than a cayman from the same year!!! |

What can I say, it is the best car I have ever owned and driven. It's very very quick in pretty much any situation and has huge amounts of grip especially off the line. Its ok on fuel, cheap to insure and only needs servicing every 2 years or 20,000.
As for the one you have found it doesn't look quite right as the next gen 2 is around 44k which is a huge jump. From looking at the price I would say it doesn't have the nav module (which is not good on a 911) and pretty much nothing in terms of spec. Like mentioned above don't buy without a warranty, while they are cheap to run they are not cheap to fix and the 997 gen 1 engine has a flaw that can cause it to fail, I know my neighbours blew up! They are awesome cars and they are in a different league to the cayman (not that the cayman is a bad car) you will not regret it!!
