Getrag or ZF?
Hi everyone!
Who sourced AT for 2007 323i (German build for Canadian market)? I think it's 6-speed mated to the 2.5. Any known issues potential buyer should be aware of? Thanks in advance for your input! |

There were stories of problems in the SL40E automatic transmissions, likely made Borg Warner, which were used by BMW in 323i, 328i, 330i, and 530i from 2000 to 2006. Apparently many of these ATs had to be replaced, but the evidence is mostly anecdotal. As for the ATs used from 2006, as far as I know: the 328i and 328xi ATs are GAGL45R, made by GM, designated as GM6; the 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi ATs are GA6HP19Z, made by ZF Friedrichshafen AG, in Germany, designated as 6HP10.

Well my 328xi just had its transmission pan and gasket replaced along with the sleeve connector of the megatronic module replaced... Just out of warrenty at 3 yrs 85000 km... Transmission was leaking fluids so if it was allowed to drain till its dry then a new transmission will be needed...

I was under impression that Getrag belongs to GM and GM transmissions are somewhat of a slushbox.I found numerous complains about 5sp Getrag AT on the net. I thought that newer 3-series (e90) are equipped with ZF made tranny - the better one. However not sure if having 6spd AT means it's made by ZF. Anyone knows for sure?Is there way of figuring out by decoding VIN?Anyways what's your general impression of 323 AT dynamics?

Basically since the turbos came out, the non-turbos get GM and the turbos get ZF. Not sure what happened before the turbos came out.

I've verified my previous post on automatic transmissions and amended the part that deals with transmissions used from MY2006 to MY2009. The amendment does not change the original information, but make it more complete.

Since Canadian market 2007 323i closely resembles US's 325i it is safe to assume it's using 6HP10 ?

To me it looks like a safe assumption, but if it matters to you a great deal, it might be better to verify what I am saying by taking the car to an independent shop, or query a technician who has worked on the 323i. You may also try to email for information to BMW AG (Germany), they have this information and often are willing to answer questions.

Canadian 2007 323i = identical 2.5L 325i from Europe with flash and cats.
The 2007 323i was 200HP, which is the same N52B25 engine found on the European 325i. The European 325i utilizes a 6HP10 tranny. So I'm going to say that the tranny installed in the 323i, is the 6HP10 from ZF. The major difference from the '07 323i and '06 323i is that the '07 has 200HP and the '06 has 170hp. The engine bay found from the '06 323i and '07 323i is quite different. |

There's no need to guess. Go on realoem.com and type in the last 7 digits of your vin. Then look for the transmission part. Numbers don't lie.

That doesn't help when someone's looking to buy a 323i and wants to know the differences between it and the rest of the lineup.
