I'd probably leave it alone, I have one in my car but it came with the car the dealership installed it. The best advice that I can give you is, if you aren't mechanically inclined id look around for a knowledgable and creditable car audio place in your area that isn't best buy. Anyways good luck

It has been done. I've seen a few retrofits threads on here. It just takes a whole lot of research to get done. To be thorough I am talking about an iDrive retrofit. Is it that you are asking of or an aftermarket install?

There is a audio/stereo sub board here
There is a audio/stereo sub board here
http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 Its way to expensive to install a factory setup it requires you get a new dash board if you don't already have idrive. (see link under head units)And if you have idrive most stick with that. If you don't there are side effects and things you have to be aware of . One of the big problems is BMW will no longer be able to do diagnostics on your car unless you parallel mount the old system. Also certain options that are linked through the radio such as PDC , SOS and CDC will cease to work and may cause error messages. If you have logic 7 you will have to get a new amp as the only thing that interfaces with the optical line from the Head Unit to Amp is the BMW Head Unit. You need to start by identifying which of the three BMW systems you have. head unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=head+unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.janus-design.net/english/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ight=head+unit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...light=retrofit http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...hlight=dynavin BMW stereo types http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352586 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1266451970 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1260829447 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138949 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780605 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 http://bmwcoders.com/forum/3-er-8/bm...1-e92-e93-291/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780865 http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...,d.cGU&cad=rja http://www.musicarnw.com/page-2/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...4&d=1278871872 There are many threads on the stereo board with examples of aftermarket HU installs. Stick with the major brands if you want a quality unit. There are many useful sub boards on this site http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=16 http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=378 Last edited by ctuna; 02-04-2014 at 11:21 AM.. |

I installed a Pioneer double din unit into my e90 with base audio with no issues. Retained all chimes, and did not have to relocate the factory HU.
If you have HiFi, or L7, PDC, or some other options, you may need to relocate the factory HU (trunk, glove box, etc.). Definitely doable, many have done it. I love mine.
