5W-40 OR 5W30 oil?

which oil to use? I'm driving a e92 328i 2007 and i was looking at the manual and it says to use either 5W-40 OR 5W30 oil. I popped open the hood and looked at the oil cap and there's no indication on which oil to use. im planning to do my own oil change. i also would like some help on what type of oil filter should i use? and are there any vendors out there that sell oil kits? thats for the help and input!

For San Diego, I'd use Mobil 1 0W40.

Here's the list of approved oils for gasoline engines in the US (Jan 08):

BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil*
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

I use BMW synthentic 5w-30 oil. Why even deviate from it ? unless you live in freezing weahter or drastic heat.

ignore track rats ramblings. go learn and understand what viscoicites mean on your oil. look at your weather patterns and your driving style.

afterwards realize that if it nevr gets sub 32 degrees where you live a 5w oil is right for you. honestly i wont use anything less than 5w-40 i drive agressively. 5w-30s are going to sucumb to sheer easier under hih driving stress.
