Help with wheel & tire sizing

Greetings .. I need some help with wheel sizing and tire sizing

Here is what I have:
2011 328i E90 LCI sedan

Wheel:
OEM 17” V Spoke model #285 with dimensions17x8 ET 34 72.6CB
- 12mm spacers in the front
- 15mm spacers in the back

Tires:

OEM 225/45R/17

What I am looking at:

Wheel:
18x8 ET35 72.6CB OR 18x9 ET35 72.6CB OR 18x8.5 ET35 72.6CB OR even go with a 18x8.5 ET20 72.6CB

My dilemma:
I understand the aspect ratio of the tire size 225/45 and the rim size of 17 on the original .. where I need your help is in trying to aid me understand following:
- what is the difference of 18x8 versus 18x9 or 18x8.5 in relation to proper tire size (ex: what kind of 225, 234, 245 and aspect ratio)
=> does a 235/40/18 sound better than a 225/40/18?
- will this give me enough clearance on the strut side (the offset calculator on the E90POST forum states (18x9 versus 18x8):
14mm LESS clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 12mm

I would like to achieve the same or maybe slightly thinner appearance of the side wall height as the original.
The automobile is a daily driver and I would like to use tires which will last a little while (ex: 35000miles+)

If anybody with the “know-how” would kindly chime in and try to give me a few pointers in the right direction with wheel size and tire brand/size I sure would appreciate it

You can use 225/40/18 or 235/40/18 with all those widths. Even wider tyre will fit to those. With 18x9 et35 you will have about 6-8mm clearance to stock shocks. You can use all those wheel possibilities you listed.

The 18x9 et35 would extend same place as your current front wheel with the spacers (8 et34+12mm) and you can use the wheel with 235/40/18 without issues. If you want you can use 18x8.5 et20 with 225/40/18 it's going to be 8mm more aggressive.

For rear the 18x9 et35 would retract 3mm from your current setup and 8.5 et20 would extend 5mm more. Basically with 18x9 et35 you will have almost the same setup as now and with 18x8.5 et20 you will have slightly more aggressive.

This is just one example 18x9 et31 with 235/40/18 square setup on Lci.
